03 SCrew radio reception problem

Radio reception is marginal on most of the FM stations in Houston (only a few come in undistorted). Have a factory 6-disc stereo. Is this a problem with the antenna or the receiver? When I'm stopped at a light, I can move forward a foot or two and the reception will improve some, but as I'm driving, I usually get the sound typical of a weak signal (trash in the mid-to-high frequency range, not related to motor RPM's). The "ST" display on the front of the radio doesn't flicker on and off like a weak signal. I also know it's not the signal because my Suburban doesn't have this problem. Don't have any distortion listening to CD's (sounds really good).

Don't want to replace with aftermarket, so keep suggestions realistic.
