Unhappy help- smoking starter

92 ford ranger 2.3- problem started yesterday. Starter will turn over and then after truck cranks starter keeps on turning. i replaced the starter last night. Made mistake of not marking which post battery to starter red wire goes on the solenoid. put neg back to battery; heard a clicking sound ; tried to crank but would not do anything. then started smoking at starter.What did i do wrong? .Thanks in advance everyone........Jimmy

it sounds to me like you smoked your new starter. Take it off and see if they can exchage it for a new one.

Your relay is stuck, you need to replace it or you'll keep frying starts (when it happened to me I had the key out of the ignition and the starter still kept going.) For my '91 it was an easy fix, its bolted to the right fender with some heavy gauge wire going to it.

Update-smoking No More= Fixed

:-d Took Starter Back And They Tested It At Store- Smoked For Them Also. Swapped Starters And No Problem . Thanks Everyone
