2000 explorer momentarly over heats on a cold start just before the thermostat opens, the gage pegs, the check gage light on, the hoses are cool to the touch then warm with a slight bubbling of coolant, the coolant originaly tested to 10 below with amb temp of -2 deg
a new sending unit was installed, the thermostat was changed twice, coolant flushed, filled and checked ,the heater valve was also checked
a "block check" was performed and no combustion byproducts in the coolant, water pump removed and inspected seems ok, no external leaks,no coolant in oil
this occures after sitting outside on cold nights
any suggestions, could this be trapped air, a head gasket on it's way out or a cracked head?
has anyone else experienced one like this?
What does the new coolant test at? A 50/50 mix should protect better than -10, and wind thru the radiator can drop the temp even lower.
Was the water pump matched against a new one when it was removed? Vane erosion isn't always apparent if you don't match it against a new pump, and might "seem OK".
50/50 should be about -25. does this do this just when it is really cold. 10 deg or colder. or higher than this. If it was when really cold then the antifreeze might be getting toward a solid (slushy) form and is not flowing, thus the overheat. open the hood just before starting and open the cap or look in the overflow to see what the antifreeze looks like (liquid or slushy). If it is even a little slushy add antifreeze or change it.
