I know this question is really about preference, but what is the best way to heat the vehicle interior.
I have a 99 Ford Explorer and I am always alternating between the heater settings.
I usually start off with the Defroster and then the truck warms up and then i will switch to defrost/floor vent.
Then I will then maybe go to bi-level & then most of the time back to defrost setting.
But it seems to me when i use only defrost setting i use more gas or maybe i am just imaging that i am using more gas.
Is there really a good economical way to use heat without burning to much gas or is it what it is in these cold climates here in Minnesota.
It depends on what you're trying to do. If you just want heat, it will probably work better to put heat out on the floor and vents, as heat rises. If you're needing to defrost the windshield, put it fully on defrost to heat the glass quicker. As to the defrost using more gas, not so likely, but it could use a little more because the defrost will engage the A/C compressor, but the cold air outside will greatly reduce the work the compressor will need to do.
You don't have to worry about engaging the AC compressor in MN for most of the year. Below about 38 degrees it won't engage so it doesn't matter what position the selector switch is in.
Above the 38 degree mark the compressor runs in all positions except the floor only settng and the vent only setting, and of course off.
