We don't have Cost for traffic court in Canada. Do all States have traffic court Costs ? If they do that's terrible, How does a poor person defend themselves ? Justice for all if you got the money.

Esay there, its is typically a small amount although there are exceptions Im sure.

As for the OP, you dont need a lawyer for a 173$ ticket although you are of course entitled to bring one. Just apologize to the court, cite your previously clean record (if it is), and ask that you be allowed to pay the fine and avoid points, possibly by attending some class or whatever.

Here has been my experiance so far
I was given a ticket for 54 in a 40 mph zone.
I went to what I thought was court. No cop so I think I'm free! Turns out this first time is my araignment(sp). I pled not guilty (I am not). The second time I go to what I think is court, no one is there. No cop, county attorny, Judge, no one. I go into the clerk of courts office and was told "Oh, didn't we call you, the judge called and can't make it today." The third trip to what is court, no cop, no county attorny so I think I'm off the hook. The judge looks at me and said what are you doing here, you don't have to be here till 2:00. I have a letter from the court that says 1:00. Judge says sorry, come back at 2:00. I come back at 2:00. Still no cop so I think it's finally over. Turns out this is a "scheduling conference" to schedule the trial. By this time I am polite but the judge knows I am hot. I now have three days wasted in this mess and still not cleared up. The judge called the county attorny, and we work out a deal of droping the charge to 44 in a 40. According to the judge this will not go on my driving record. (less than 6 mph over the speed limit is not susposed to in most cases in Wyoming). I'm checking with my insurance to find out.

I guess the short of this story is all the stuff I have read on the internet is not true. It all depends on what state you live in. If no record of this ticket goes on my insurance, at this point I'll take the plea to avoid waisting another day in court. I think I could beat the ticket if I go to court, but I have $600 in my time tied up in this already.

You must have been speeding pretty good for a $173 ticket.

If you want to Play you gotta Pay Just suck it up that pay your fine and the increase in insurance rates and move on.

Maybe you will learn something from this.

I actually beat a speeding ticket telling the truth...stretching the truth.

Yes I was doing 85 in a 55 late evening....no traffic at 1 am, and my daughter was ill.
The female magistrate handling the fine gave me a NR. Not responsible"

I think after hearing all the lame excuses to get around the fines, my case was worth waiving.

Almost forgot one other thing to check. I had a ticket once that was issued at around the end of December and the court date was for January of the next year; well, should have been the next year but the cop put the same year that I got the ticket... like Dec 91, court Jan 91 so obviously I could not go without a time machine. I didn't go, didn't pay, never heard about it again. Make sure everything is accurate on the ticket.

Lots of good advice. Things vary by state AND county. Few years back
when people still drove 65 on the freeway I got a 88 mph ticket. Over
$300.00 ticket. So here is the story. Went to court plain jane blue collar.
Sat in the back and observed the proceedings. Don't do like all the rest
and go up there and try & cop a plea cause the man has heard it all.
When the ticket was read & I was asked "How do you plea"? I replied
"Guilty your Honor" and then I shut my mouth. The man was waiting for
the song & dance which he didn't get. He actually asked me after a facial
shudder what the circumstances were. "I was late for my tee time golfing
with my brother your Honor" That- with my clean record got my ticket
halved and my insurance co never found out. The judge must have been
golfer lol Good luck RZ
