Went by the local LineX and RhinoLiner franchises today to check out there products. I am NOT trying to start the whole "which is best" thread again because there seems to be plenty of those already. I just took delivery of my new 05 SD Lariat and had them both take a look at it and was surprised when the guy at the Rhino place said that he couldn't do over the rail because on the Fords when you remove the rail caps there is a small channel and holes underneath it. Now the truck is only 2 days old and I haven't started taking anything apart yet, but I was planning on doing the liner over the rails. The LineX "office person" not the installer, didn't mention anything about it.
I realize a lot of you have a sprayed bedliner. Did you do it over the rails? If you did, did they have to do any body work prior to spraying the liner? Or, just leave the plastic caps on and spray up to them? Would you do it the same way again today?
I did mine up to the cap. When I got mine done I was thinking of doing over the rail but the ArmorThane dealer told me that there will be some holes left on top of the rail. I told him that would be fine, if I didn't like the way it looked I would put the rail caps back on, thats when he said you might as well go order them cause he has never done a truck where the tabs on rail caps don't break
just had a rhino liner done recently to my 05 f350, here's what I had done:
before spraying - bed bolts, rubber grommets, anchor points removed
tailgate inside panel - removed, sprayed separately
tailgate cap removed, side rail caps left on (as they will break in removal so I'm told)
tailgate and truck rear sprayed to bottom, make sure drain holes are kept open.
hope this helps, good luck.
Seems like everyone just did up to the cap. That is surprising considering everyone at the liner places are pushing doing over the rail, except the one place. Must be the $50 dollar surcharge for going over the top. It seems to me that going over the rail would be the best way to go if the top rail doesn't look too goofy or require some body work to give you a flat surface. I also wondered about how they would feather it in at the edge. At the LineX place they emphasised that they use a masking technique with a wire embedded in it that gives them a sharp edge. The Rhino dealer talked about using a razor knife to finish the edge, which made me nervous. Maybe I'll just quit worrying about it and do up to the cap.
Anybody know what a new cap costs?
Look at the pictures of my truck which has been sprayed with line-x
and they did a great job. They didn't remove the rails, just the bolts
and brackets on the inside of the bed.
Also, there is an option to have it sprayed with the protectant
which will keep the bed from fading. I purchased the stuff and
did it myself which took a good afternoon. But, If I had the
choice then have them spray it on since all the hardware is
already removed. It's like 100 bucks extra, but I feel it is worth it.
I can answer any questions you have? lorenzo @ nethere . com
My profile has several pictures of the truck with the bed sprayed.

Ok, well it appears, at least in this forum that no one has had the "over the rail" lining done. I guess I'll just bow to the collective wisdom here and abandon that line of thinking.
Lorenzo, nice pics. You know, I saw a blurb about a restorative product on the LineX website, but no one at either of the dealers I visited mentioned any sort of UV protector, sealer or anything else to be applied in addition to the liner itself. Maybe that pitch will come later. Everyone, thanks for your comments.

When I went to have my sprayed I asked him about it. He said, it's worth
it, but you can buy the can for 30 dollars and apply it yourself. The only
problem with this is all the hardware must be re-moved again. It comes
in a can and you apply it with a sponge. It put it on in two sperate layers
on two different days.
It's work, but if you have the money.. have them spray it on since your
bed will not turn grey after several months. He said, the UV stuff is good
for two years and showed me two trucks. One, with and one without the
UV protectant and there was a big difference.

OverHeight - The local Linex dealer wanted $675 but his work looked top notch, Rhino liner guy wanted $550 and I wasn’t as impressed, but neither would pull the bed bolts. I went to a trusted local body shop/ muscle car builder. He had no problem with it as he pulls bodies often and sprays Rhino too. He suggested the tailgate cap and rubber grommets, which I didn't know about and no one else offered. Think he sprayed an extra coat inside the bed over the wells too. He also baked the stuff on with high temp lamps. F350 cc lwb barely fit in the spray booth. Guaranteed it for life, whose I don't know, but I'm very happy with the result. I paid $500 at the end of Dec, but I understand the cost of the rhino spray went up a bit this year. Get your spray from someone you trust, that seemed more important than which brand to me and the price was right too! Good luck.
I'm going back to the local LineX dealer on Wednesday. I talked to a saleslady there, but can see that I really need to talk to the one who does the application. Want to ask him the questions about removing the bed bolts, tailgate cap and the plugs in the front of the bed. The questions raised have given me a lot more to think about. I hope to get it done Thursday. Going to do up to the caps on the side rails. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
I had an Xtreme Brand liner done on mine up to the caps (no rail) for $351.00 tax included (short bed). Looks good, they did a nice job, pulled the bed bolts but they did sprau over the plugs in the front of the bed. I would rather they had not done that but suspect the plugs may not have fit back in properly if they had pulled them out before spraying the bed. Could have taped them I suppose. Time will tell if it holds up.
My daughter has a Toff brand liner in her Ranger that was done before we bought the truck in Spring 99. It seems to be a bit softer than the Xtreme liner that I had applied to my truck and it did flake off in a few places over the years but I took it in just last month to have it fixed and they did it for nothing (true lifetime warranty). It had faded but it is seven years old.
I have no experience with Rino or Linex but plenty of others do. I suspect they ae all pretty good.
