Hello, I just purchased a 2002 explorer 4 dr with 55,ooo mi, it had a motor problem so i never drove it before this. I did the trans service with a factory filter and ford mercon V ,because the tranny guy at the dealer(only place to get the correct filter) said generic mercon V did not meet ford specs, and they had recived a bullitan on other fluids causing problems. I used a ir temp gauge, and checked the fluid level on two other occasions, so i'm confident it is filled correctly.
With that said when you go from Park to Drive you "hear" what I assume is the silonoid, it goes zzzzzz(kinda high pitched electric motor sound) but no noticable delay in engaging drive. Also when you shut off the key it does the same sound for about 1 second . The trans shifts very smoothly and I do not notice the delay like posted in other questions. the rpms never go up when shifting, so i dont think it is slipping. I am wondering if something is on its way out, and I can replace a small part before it does more damage. Any input is appreciated Thanks

gogo99 my 02 xlt v6 had 87k when i picked it up. Around 90k had the buzz 2 or 3 times, never had a reason to use 4x4 until Thanksgiving, At about 94k tried 4x4, no work. Could the buzz I had, had something to do with the 4x4 taking a dump? Was told the tranny is good for 100k. Pete Johnson
I replaced the filter with a new ford filter, and the guy at the dealer seemed pretty knowledgeable he warned about aftermarket mercon V not meeting ford specs. what is the exact new filter#. It does this weather it is in 4X$ or not ot definatly seems to be from the tranny. Any thoughts??
