94 Cold Start Problem
I need a 2nd opinion.
First off my explorer that is having the problem is my 1994 xlt 4x4 4.0L v-6 automatic trans.
This occurs on cold start up only.
1. On cold start up it runs rough. It is like it is running on four or 5 cylinders.
2. If you put the accelerator to the floor it will not rev above 2K rpm.
3. It also looks to be blowing a lot of steam out the exhaust. I have smelled the exaust and did not detect any antifreeze.
4. It does not want to up shift very well at all. The same symptom you get when the vacuum diaphragm on the side of the Trans fails
5. I also noticed that the brakes are acting like there is no power assist. Like there is no vacuum getting to the power booster.
6. I have also noticed that it has been loosing a little bit of antifreeze. I have to add about a quarter cup every week or so.
7. I am not loosing any Trans fluid.
8. Once it is warmed up it runs and shifts absolutely fine.
Since I just had a new / rebuilt transmission installed. This is the 2nd one in less than 5k miles as the first one I had rebuilt had a failure in the NEW torque converter and sent metal all through the transmission. I am so thank full that I got the warranty.
What I am thinking is that I am experiencing the early onset of intake manifold gasket failure. When the motor is cold there is a leak causing a drop in manifold vacuum. This causes the shifting, brakes and the loss of antifreez. Once it warms up things expand and it seals up and runs ok.
What do you all think?
Respectfully
Dean
