I have a 1979 f-250 and i need to know what emissions crap has to be present to pass the visual inspection in PA. Also, I want to put headers with dual exhaust and need to know if that is affected by the emissions. I am afraid that I will need cats. Thanks.
No idea on what equip has to be present, down here in Bayou country we dont have to mess with that junk. If I had to guess I would say whatever components are listed on your underhood sticker i.e. EGR, EVAP Canister and cats, but with an F-250 this is most likely limited to EGR possibly. That is all my 77 F-250 had. Depends on the GVW, mine is 7,700
Snagmaster, I just went through the same thing here un PA. Nobody could tell me what my 76 was supposed to have. I took some pictures of the old girl and got classic plates. Now I am exempt from the emissions law, so I can make it fun, plus I never have to pay a yearly registration.
I know stuff was changing quickly in the late 70's, but my 78 F150 had a "Non-Catalyst" decal under the hood which pretty much gave carte-banche to do whatever I wanted to the engine.
It also depends on where you are taking your truck to get inspected - which is key in PA. I was tight with my inspection mechanics and as long as it passed the sniffer test (no problem there: 168 HC - far under the 800HC limit), they would overlook the visual stuff... "Hmm... are you sure those bumpers are at 30"?" "Why yes... yes they are... " (actually, they were at 30"... barely... if you let some air out of the tires...)
Bad news, a '79 had everything on it. Every inspection garage should have a Motors Manual for emission requirements. Some use the Chiltons manual.
I got a Pa. collectable plate for my truck.
If your truck says unleaded fuel only on the fuel guage and has a little dodad in the filler neck to only allow a small fuel filler nozzel. You should have a PCV system, Air Pump, an EGR valve, and a catalytic converter.
If your truck says nothing on the guage and has a large opening in the gas filler that means you truck was also able to use leaded gas. You should have a PCV system and an EGR valve.
Since yours is a 3/4 I would think that it would not have catalitic converters or air pumps. so just make sure your PCV is hooked up and if you don't currently have an EGR valve on your truck they are easy to come by.
That beeing said, I have no cat and the air pump is disconnected on my unleaded only 79 f-150 and my 76 f-150 has nothing except an PVC (also it has headers and a dual exhaust) and I have no problems getting them inspected.
My gas guage says unleaded only but my filler neck is not restricted. Hopefully I can get away with no cats and no air pump (I have it but its disconnected) Thanks for the help
