Column Shifter Hell

Just when you think you're out ......

Shifter worked great for one day after I tightened screws at bottom of column with help of Racerguy's post. It was almost falling off.

This morning, it made a click when I put it in gear and the lever wen't totally limp. I added four viagra to the gas, no dice. Cant get it into park without crawling under the dash and moving the lever by hand. The screw tightening fix is still solid, the problem is now higher up in the column.

What does the top part of the assembly look like, what might be broken and do I have to remove the steering wheel (with airbag) to get at it?

arrrggggghhhhh.

Remove the steering column covers and you'll be able to see the tube that goes from the shift lever to the lever at the bottom where you tightened the screws. The tube may have broken. You don't need to remove the steering wheel to get at it.

Thanks Racerguy, you are indeed a valuable wealth of information.

I will be getting to that this afternoon. The sooner I get this fixed, the sooner she gets the A* back and I get to drive my F-150 again.

OK, Shift tube it is. Broken right up the middle. All I have to do is find one and hopefully I'm back in business.

Those metal tubes break ALL THE TIME i have seen it many times, and on my 1994 Aerostar (before I scrapped it) I replaced it at least 6 times since the van was new. They are made of crppy Cast Aluminum, I wonder if there maybe isnt a revised edition of that part. Oh well the van I have now is a floor shift (1991) so i don't have to worry about that.

Everything went well, about an hour & 1/2 to 2 to do the job and reset the cable adjustment at the tranny.

The parts I got from ford (tube and plunger) looked significantly different in construction from the ones I replaced. I asume they had to make some changes.
