All Wheel Drive was available as an option from 1990 until the Aerostar's demise in 1997. I believe it was available on both the short wheel base and long wheel base Aerostars. It was powered by a viscous coupling that changes the percentage of driving power from 70/30 rear/front to 50/50 rear/ front based on the difference in speed detected between the front and rear wheels. AWD came with the 4.0L engine.

AFAIK, the wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheel centerlines) is identical on all Aerostars. The long ones ("extended") merely have more rear axle overhang.
asavage, you are correct. I was thinking a longer body when I wrote a longer wheelbase. Sorry for the confusion. The dealer says AWD was an OPTION on both the short body style and the extended van.

There are no viscous couplings in the Aerostar; it's all done with clutches. I wish it used viscous couplings, as they don't wear out like the clutches will,
and they engage more smoothly.
