Ok....I just bought a 97 expy and it had only one problem, a loose shifter, and i read about expys having a problem with the torques head screws backing out of the shifter bracket located on the steering column. Went to tighten the up and one of the thread holes one the bracket was busted completely out, so now i have only one screw holding it in....so my question is how do i fix it? whats the actual name for that bracket and can i buy it or do i have to get the whole steering column assembly???
there is nothing left to tap....that half of it is gone, busted completely out! theres nothing to put the bolt in either, the metal plate that lies against it is still in tact, but the cast brace that the bolt threads into behind it has shattered around that bolt hole.
Because of the space available to work in it might be time to check out the salvage yards for a good used column. That might be less work than trying to replace the bracket alone, if you can find the bracket alone.
Is it a cast aluminum "U" shape piece?
I removed the covers from the column of my truck (the F-650) on Monday.
I found pieces of what appeared to be such a clamp.
There was a unbroken part in place at the top of the column.
Is there another closer to the firewall?
It looks a lot like a conduit strap.
HUMMMmmmmmm! (Redneck engineering for "Will it work?")
