My 4x4 worked all weekend and now it does not engauge and the dashlight (4X4) does not light up. I have check the fuse under the dash and under the hood and both are good. The hubs are locked, and air lines are connected. I was under the truck and pouned on the motor on the transfer case as my wife flicked the 4X4 switch back and forth and still nothing. The 4X4 light goes on with all the other dash lights when I'm starting the motor, so I know the bulb is good. Any thoughts
You may have to drive it a short distance to get it to engage again. Try backing out of the driveway, then drive forward about 100 feet, try again. I'm guessing you have ESOF, so you can actually flip the switch to 4hi while you are driving at low speeds. See if that works. Every now and again it can get stubborn and not want to cooperate.
Mine for a short time wouldn't work either. Lights worked but 4x4 failed. I had read somewhere here it is use it or lose it. I began engaging it on soft turf and running it and disengaging it. All is fine now. Be sure that your hoses are not split. I have seen hoses that were on but had a split and resulted with a vacuum leak.
A quick test for vacuum leak: put your a/c or heat on front vents only, then engage 4hi. If it automatically switches to defrost, then you have a leak. If not then you have a very small leak or another problem altogether.
If you have the electric shift transfer case check the plug in at the motor. They can corrode and cause a no shift scenario. If this is not the problem and you have power to the plug then you need the shift control motor assembly as if it is a vacuum leak the light should still illuminate.
I do have ESOF shift on the fly. I pulled the wire harness on the the motor and sprayed it with eletrical contact cleaner. I've tried the back and forth movment of the truck, but no luck.
Navistar444, I would like to check the voltage to that motor via the motor-end of the wire harness, do you know if it should read 12-volts? Or is it less?
Also, I pulled the ESOF switch out of the dash and noticed that it has four wires going to it. Is there anyway I could jumper them and activate/test the system?
Its been a while since I tested one, but I believe there should be battery voltage there as the main feed must operate the shift motor. Also, note when you shift to 4 low(trans in neutral) if you can hear it shifting. This quick test will eliminate the need to probe the plug for power, if no noise is heard, then your transfer case is not shifting and if there is no power to the plug your motor assy is toast. changed more than a few at my days at the ford dealer.
I'll mess with it over the weekend it’s too cold out now to crawl under it. And, I’ll get back to the forum when I find the problem. Last night I switched around the main relays located under the hood next to the brake fluid reservoir. That did not help. I do not hear any clicking or shifting of the motor or the relays.

If that motor is “toast” would that keep the dash light from lighting up??
Yes, the light wouldnt come on as the switch for it is in the transfer case. Chances are that the motor is gone, but dont rule it out until you check for power at the plug. Forgive my mechanic slang for toasted electrical parts!
