I've got a problem these past few days since it got really cold. The engine temp gauge never gets up to where it used to, but it never did in really cold weather. By cold I mean between 10 and 25. It's getting really hard to start, too, but the batteries are over 4 years old and getting tired. My problem is that on occasion the heater will start blowing cold air. It will get warm, then for no apparent reason it will get cold and then later go back to warm. While it's doing this the temp gauge will sometimes go a little haywire, rising to the mid-normal range for a few moments and then very rapidly falling back to below the normal range. I did notice that the overflow reservoir is empty and I was wondering if the engine has some type of valve that is quarrentining the coolant for the engine. It's like no heated coolant is getting to the heater core. But if this were the case, the temp gauge wouldn't act so erradic. Any ideas?
Bring the reservoir level back up to where it needs to be and check for a coolant leak.
I second that. In addition, you could be severly overheating your engine by attempting to run without the proper amount of coolant in the system. No coolant in contact with the engine means sever case of hot spots and possible cracked heads, blown head gaskets, scored cylinder walls, weak piston rings from running too hot and losing thier shape, etc........
