One common problem was the V6 serpentine belt tensioner - they would spilt and fall off leaving you stranded. Many people complained of a ticking noise before it failed. BUT, I thought this was a problem with the 2001 and Ford redesigned them in 2002. Could be some early 2002 production models had the faulty tensioner. They seemed to fail well under 50k miles.

I've read a few complaints with warped exhaust manifolds and/or missing bolts causing a ticking. I've got a 2002 with over 80k miles and haven't had any ticking.

Engine ticking

I just had my oil changed on my 2002 Escape the other day, and the new accelerator cable installed as a result of the recall for the faulty accelerator cable sticking, and as my wife pulled into the driveway, I heard a ticking noise that I had not heard before. I immediately called the service manager at the local dealership who changed the oil and inquired if there were any service bulletins that came out recently about a ticking noise. He said that there was not, but to bring the Escape in the next day and he would get someone on it. It is still under warranty for 3000 more miles. The next day after my wife brought the Escape back, I recieved a call from the manager that they had recieved reports, in the form of a bulletin, but not a recall, indicating that the cam needed to be retorqed to the proper calibration. You may want to check with your service manager and see if he has recieved any bulletin to this effect. This is an excellent dealership that I have been dealing with and once they made the adjustment, the ticking went away. Also, while you are speaking to your service manager, if you have not done so already, have your accelerator cable replaced, as there was a recall to have that replaced if you have not done so already. Hope this helps.

thanks for info....I will have this checked out soon. I also have had the accelerator cable stick on my as well. But when I ran the oasis report on my truck...(I work at a dealer). It did not come up as to having to be replaced for my truck.. I also didn't see any bullentins about the ticking noise either.... Maybe they think it doens't apply to the 4 cyl.?

Don't know. The report he got for us was not a bulletin, but an update that this ticking noise has been reported and the solution is to retorque. That is what he told us anyway.

Thanks again for the info....thought that maybe I was missing something by not seeing a bulletin about it. I already spoke with my mechanic and he is going to take a look at it. With any luck, there won't be any more little problems with my truck. I love it, so fun to drive and it's just the right size for me. Plus it was available in standard shift. By far, thee best "truck". Hopefully nest time, we all will be posting good news about our vehicles.

Question Also have a ticking noice

I also have a ticking noice coming from the engine on my 02 Escpae
it started about when i got 50K miles on it. I was wondering with supposivley the cam getting retorqued or maybe the belt tensioner gettin replaced if the dealers charged you to get this done? Man that tickin noise makes my car sound like a POS.

My dealer charged me nothing for the retorque job. I also am less than 36000 miles so maybe that is why. Even if I had to pay for it I would have. It really has made a difference.

Well, so far I have not had the luck the I hoped for. Everyone at the dealer is telling me that nothing seems to apply to the 4 cyl. Although I am happy to hear that I am not alone in hearing this problem. Now I have to take my truck to another dealer and more than likely will have to pay for this to be fixed. It would be great if Ford would own up to their little problems and fix them for us at no cost. Even though I love my truck, it's pretty bad when you drive down the road and everyone looks at you because your vehicle is making noise. One would think for the price we paid that there would not be any problems. It is kinda funny how I seem to get more info off of this site than I do at work. Glad I joined!

I will try to call the service manager at the dealership where I had the work done, as we take the Escape there even for the oil changes, and see if he can tell me what "report" or bulletin he was referring to. If he gives me the information, I will post it here. This is a good forum, and the Escape is a good vehicle. I am sorry that you have that ticking noise. If there is any way I can get any information from him, I will. Stay tuned!

I thank you for helping out Beanster. It's nice to know that this site is actually helpful. I'll make sure that I keep checking my mail........Anyways....does anyone have any good news about their vehicle. Pictures would be really nice to see....I have many. I've gone on a a few road trips with it and the drive is always awesome. Right now it's snowing outside and am sooo looking forward to the drive. These little "trucks" handle so great in any kind of weather. So far, this is the best truck that I have ever owned. Hope that everyone out there enjoys theirs the same!!!

Well, as luck would have it, the service manager was unavailable today when I called, I honestly forgot to call during the week. The service manager on duty said that SOP for what they done to my Escape would be to look for a service bulletin that would show this problem. It would not, he said, be a recall, but an identification of the problem that has popped up on the radar nationwide service bulletin and how to address it. So, it was not a recall, technically, but it was a problem that warranted a bulletin. Hope this helps, but that is almost verbatim whay they just told me. What state are you in?
