So I just bought this 96 XLT and the Cruise stopped working out of the blue. It worked when I went to work I did climb under it during lunch to wipe some oil off the bottom of the block just to see if I had fixed the leak in the oil plan. Then I got back in it and it wouldent engage. I cannot think of anything else out of the ordinary that I did other then whipe down the under carrage a bit. Is it possible I knocked somthing loose, that you guys can think of, that would render the cruise inoperable? I checked the fuse box for a coralating fuse and found nothing on the little fuse chart. Any suggestions?
Thanks
I had my CC go out also a while back on my 96 XLT. There is a switch on top of the brake fluid container. I think that is the switch that cuts it off when the brakes are pressed. You should be able to get the switch at a low cost, but I'm not sure if the anything special is needed for the brake line pressure. Seems like the dealer fixed it for $70. Good luck.
I had the same problem and replace the switches on the steering wheel without any improvement. Then I opened the unit that pulls the cable to the trottle. It turned out that water got into the unit and froze the motor at the one end of the unit. I oiled the gears and used plier to unfreeze the motor. It worked fine after that.
pull the red plug from the front of the brake fluid container, if there is brake fluid in it it went bad. It must be bought a a dealership it is under $25. Mine did the same thing no warning or anything cruise will just quite working. It is some sort of safety feature. Replace it yourself cost less and toakes 5 minutes, I pulled the sensor plug and then remover the threaded part and let the sensor plug dry out before plugging it in again. I belive it goes bad a lot the guy at the dealership knew exactly what i was trying to fix.
So I unplugged the connecter from the red plug on the master cylinder. There was no brake fluid inside. Is there any other sensors that you guys can think up. I think I am being punished by the power gods for using cruise control when I have a 351W under my foot :-).
I have an 89 Bronco full size, don't know if this will work for yours, I reached under that dash and pulled the plug on what is essentially the brain of the cruise control, Ran it without it being plugged in and then reconnected it, starting working after that and has worked ever since, possibly like re-booting the computer, don't know if this will work for you but good luck either way
I have the same problem and I allready replaced the clockspring and servo and I was told that it could be the brake proportioning valve inside the frame under the drivers side door. Could this be a posible problem?
