Hey all, I've been a member for awhile but I think this is my first or second post on here. So here it goes. I've got an 84 ford f250, it came factory with a/c (still works), underdash lights, and a 302 that has 260,000 and still starts on the first turn of the key, dont smoke either. It was factory with an aod but after going throu 3 of them I decided to go with a c6. Well I'm on my 2 c6 but it doesn't look like this one's gone anytime soon.
The problem is that my cruise doesn't work, actualy i've never seen it work, my grandfather says that he never used it so he doesn't know if it ever worked. I pulled the vacume hose off of the vacume cable assy. and it had full vacume no leaks, motor actualy died when i took it off. I can only think of a few things wrong. I think the vacume cable thing or the round speed thing on the speedo cable. I've checked all the fuses. None bad. I'm wantin it to work because its the only thing in the whole truck that doesn't work.
How popular was the underdash lights, I've never seen them on any other truck?
Also I found a factory dash cluster with a tach in it, if i just swap it in will the tack function or is there some wire in there that has to be hooked up? Its out of a v8 going in a v8. but will the deisel tack work for a gas truck, because i found one that looks real nice with a red band on it for red line.
were is the brain box, i've checked the vacume, its fine, speedo cable works fine, i dont know about the speedo sensor, is it something i can get at autozone, or a ford dealer? and what wires should be hot at the steering wheel, i took it all apart but got no were
Brain box,
Usually up under the dash attached to the inside firewall left of the pedal bracket's.
There are Cruise control testing procedures in shop manuals.
The speed sensor is normally a ford part but,who knows these days.'
It used to be located in the speedometer cable.

yea its on the speedo cable, i saw it there when i changed the lower portion of the cable, now that i think about it, there is a little black box dangleing down that i just shoved back up into the dash somewere, if its not grounded, would that make it not work?
alright, i went out to the truck and found the little box, it has two pigtails hooked to it, one goes to another pigtail, and the other goes to the wiper switch, is this the right black box? there is another off to the right of the steering column, its biger, i took it off and noticed that a ground wire behind it was unhooked, i hooked it back up and nothin changed, what does this box do? also behind this box against the firewall is another wire, a yellow one, it has what looks like a small spark plug boot on it. its just laying there not hooked to anything, what does it go to?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Jul-02 AT 01:23 AM (EST)] The box you've found is probably the wiper Delay relay if your truck is equipped w/ delay...I'll Review my schematics...the Haynes manual#36058 section 12-31, in the upper right-hand corner of the page, it illustrates a "cruise control amplifier" with all of the wire colors shown. I believe this will be of some help
alright, i put my head down buy the brake pedal and looked to my left, there was a box screwed to the bottom of the dash with two grey plugs in it, i think this is what your talking about, there are no other boxes. nothing up behind the instrument cluster.
About the underdash lights. I got em on my 84 F 150 XLT and I think they only came on the XLT models until after 86. My cruise didnt work neither so I took it off. Now I need a non cruise control horn pad. Anybody got one?
The box you found with two grey plugs is the cruise brain box.
The things that run the cruise control are:
Cruise switches (check for continuity)
Power to cruise switches
Power to brain box
Wiring from brain box
The throttle control on the carb & linkage
The vacuum system
The brake switch
The speedo cable sensor & wiring.
Sounds to me like you need the cruise conctrol failure, diagnosis guide?

were about would i get a cruise repair guide. and about the underdash lights, my truck isn't an xl or an xlt. Actualy its kinda funny optioned. It has a cheaper light tan paint job, with no chrome, but it has a cloth seat, under dash lights, deluxe over head light group, cruise and air conditioning. It also has the heavy duty cooling system. Its got a two barrel 302, and had a aod, but its replaced by a c6 with a shift kit(by accident). It doesn't have any sway bars thou, front or back. I dont know much about the way these trucks were optioned, is there a link on the website that tells this kinda info? I really like this truck, I drive it almost 100 miles a day without it missing a beat, and its got 270,000 miles.
