I have a 1968 F-250 Crew Cab six cyl 4 spead two wheel drive 8 lug truck with no P.S., no P.B., no a/c---you get yhe picture---plane stock. I want to turn it into a great driving street truck, that runs good and looks good enough to do local shows with. My desires are a 428 or 429 motor with an automatic, P.S., P.B., A/C, P.W., PDL, wide back tires, lowered ( not undriveable), tilt wheel and so on---I hope you get some kind of idea of what I am looking to do. I have the skills to do a lot of the work but lack the knowledge of what will work and what won't work. Any help our suggestions on what to use, not to use , interchangeable parts and so on. To start with would be engine swap, front and rear disc add, power stering, power brakes and will the front end handle the big block and perfome well. Thanks Rodney ---rskp@bellsouth.net---
get a 73-79 truck with a 460 in it, that will give you disks, powerbrakes, and the 460/mounts. A/C is under the dash on these, so you will have to hunt for a nice unit. seats will work from 96-7 back.
tilt steering was offered in 77-79 but might look odd with your dash style, you may have to modify a 60's car slender steering column to get tilt and look right.
Not having any knowledge of the trucks, is the 73-79 front and rear end the same. I have a F-250---do I need to look for a F-250? I believe I would also need a two wheel drive to do this with. I would like to get away from the 8 lug. It appears the brakes mount to the firewall, will this be a direct swap out. On the tilt could I order a colume form Ididit that would solve this size issue. Thanks for your help.

Reason: add info
u could order one from idit but it would need modifying on the wiring i beleive...if im correct if u want to get away from the 8-lug u must go for a 100 and yes it MUST be a two wheel drive, grab the whole front end(disk's,i-beams,tie rods,ECT.)u have to grab the brake booster and the presure valve,i think thatsa wut its called,no idea
Thanks for all the knowledge. It is just hard to believe that I can take a front end off of a 1979 and bolt it in a 1968. Will the power brakes be a direct bolt in and the same with the power steering. What about the rear end. I have a 1979 F-150 XLT camper special with a 460 automatic---all power options including a built in CB that I could do this with.
Rodney, Take a look at the technical article on adding disc breaks to a 67 to 72 model.
The stuff from your 79 will be a direct bolt up as far as the front end is concerned. Just pull the whole front end out of your 79 and bolt it under your 67.
As far as the rear end is concerned, you will need to find a rear end ou of a 67 to 72 model truck. The 79 will not be a direct bolt up. The 73 to 79 rear end is supposed to be a little wider than the ones from 67 to 72.
The power steering is also a direct bolt up. Take the gear box and collum out of the 67, and bolt the 79 collum and gear box in it's place. Then all you have to do is hook up the power steering lines to the gear box.
Measure the leaf springs on both trucks. I think that the F250 will be a little wider than the F150. If that is the case you will need to use the spring hangers from the F150 also.
Does the 79 have cruise control? If so, that will be an easy swap also.
Also check the 79 for a front and rear anti sway bar. Camper specials should have them and that will also be an easy swap.
Mike
Thanks Mike---Does that mean that the tilt colume out of the 79 will go into the 68. I will check on the cruize control and sway bars. On the coment on the rearend on using a F-150, I asume you were talking about using a 67-72 rearend. I also am trying to decide what motor to use---428,429 or a 460. Any suggestions. I am not a hotrodder, I want an engine I can depend on, sounds good, looks good for local car shows but still has plenty of power to turn the tires for my kids.Where can I find the tech artical you made refreance to?
Thanks Rodney
Rodney, the 428 is a different block than the 429/460 block.
I'm partial to the FE series of motors, but if you already have a 460 then I would use it. You already have all of the parts (your F150) that you need to swap over the crew.
Rodney, Go to the right side of this page near the top. Click on the words Tech article. It will take you there.
Use the 460 because you already have it.
You will need a 67 to a 72 rear end.
Mike
Rodney, there are actualy lengthy answers to each of your questions. It might help if you posted one question at a time. Did the tech article answer your questions as far as front end and breaks?
When you start searching for a rear axle, try to find either a 3:00 or 3:25.
2:75 is too high to have any real fun with, and 3:50 will eat you alive on gasoline with a 460 if you do much highway driving. I currently have a set of 3:00 gears in my truck, but I believe 3:25 would work better as far as play.
I do a lot of highway driving, and with the 3:00 gears I get about 12 miles per gallon with a 460 and c6.
