Hello, first post here. VERY helpful site; thank you. A year ago, I bought a well maintained, 1-owner, 1994 F-150 4x4 which I enjoy immensely. It has over 150,000 miles but you would hardly know it. I want to take care of it and since I don't know when tranny fluid was last changed, I thought I would get that done. Well, the shop I took it to discouraged me from getting it changed, saying that older ED04's often fail after changing fluid, and it's best to leave it alone. Does anyone know anything about this? THANKS!!
Bulls**t. I have 239,000 + miles on my E4OD and use it to make a living with , 4WD every day on construction lots, tow a 3 horse slant gooseneck trailer on weekends and change the fluid/filter every 60,000 miles. The shop in question must have had to address an issue with an E4OD after changing the fliud/filter and have a bad taste in their mouth (see above opening remark). I change the t-case, and differential (both) lube every 60,000 also. With oil changes every 3,000 and the above maintenance you should expect quite a long relationship with your truck. If you have auto hubs as I do take tham down twice an tear and clean. I use Marvel Mystery oil as a soak after cleaning and like I said, I shift into 4WD every day. I commend you on your desire to maintain your truck. It's necessary and pays off in the long run.

A few years ago I bought a '92 F250 with 116,000 mi. At 120,000 mi the E4OD went out and I had to have it rebuilt to the tune of $2000. The shop supposedly used updated parts to rebuild it and the tech told me it "should be good for 100,000 mi".
Well now I have 260,000 mi. on the truck (140,000 mi on the rebuilt trans.) I have never changed the fluid and I am ready to do so. I have learned on this board not to use Dextron V/ Mercon V fluid or Ford type F fluid. I got a couple of cases of Napa Dextron III/Mercon III fluid. I hope this is the right stuff. I hope we get some comments on this.
Hardscrabble,
Super tech article, 'specially the part about the o-ring that might not come out. Happened to me on my first change. I have never found the filter clogged and never found much residue on the magnet. I have attributed that to the 60,000 change cycle, though. When you live in a high humidity area and work the truck pretty regularly, I like to keep my PM up, personal decision.
