4 wheel drive not engaging

Hey guys my brother has a 89 bronco 2 almost like mine. We just got some snow so he thought he would try the 4 wheel drive out. When you put it in 4 high (just pull straight back) it will stay in until you let off the gas then it will disengage. If you hold your hand on it to keep it in 4 high it will run fine. He is going to put a stick from the firewall to the shifter to hold it in for now. There is no grinding at all. Could it need adjusted and how do you do it? What would make it get misadjusted? Thanks for the help.

Can't remember the specifics, but you can adjust the detent plate to make sure it's in the right place. Specifics are in any decent manual (even Chilton's. see the vehicle repair guides at www.autozone.com for an electronic version of Chilton's). Also check all the pieces of the linkage to make sure the bolts are tight and bushings/washers aren't worn.
