Strange noise
I have a 1994 F-150 with an inline six and auto tranny. In the speed range of 65-70mph it makes a loud humming noise that seems to come from directly under the cab. My dad said it might be the universal joints going out. How do you tell if the U-joints are bad? Could the transmission or differential be making the noise? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yes it could be in the transmission, the u-joints like dad said, the rear end or bearings, or even tires. Sometimes the joints will make a ping or clunk noise when you put it in gear or go into reverse when they start to wear. Occasionally you can park it on level ground and climb under there and see if there is play in the drive shaft. If it has a lot of miles the u-joints might be a good and fairly cheap place to start.
