This can become a can of worms since it is a Ford were dealing with.
The 312 block. crank, rods & pistons are unique. Almost that is as the 62-4 forged crank as used in HD trucks has rods that can be used.
All 239 thru 292 cranks interchange but there are seal differences.
239/256 car blocks and early 239 Dearborn built trucks have unique heads, intake and exhaust manifolds. Later stuff can be swapped as a total package.
The cams are unique also.
239/256 Cleveland built truck engines , EBV/EBY codes, share everything with the 272/292. The latter can be easily bored to 292 +
Some differences in head intake and exhaust port sizes in the pre 57 vs 57-59. No biggie as long as you match things up a bit with a grinder and gasket as the template.
Some front cover/water pump differences in 54 trucks.
Im typing this on the fly, others can add to it.
Got to go sit in a 56 F600 and plow snow all night now.

Hey Carl, I'll bet you're getting really dumped on. I'm a little jealous - we haven't gotten much snow here in Idaho.
Carl is real good with the details, especially with the trucks.
I'll paraphrase and summarize; the early 239 was an odd duck, beware.
Pretty much all 256, 272, and 292 parts interchange and you can include some of the 239's, but be careful about those 239's.
The 312 crankshaft had a larger main journal diameter, so it would't fit the other Y-blocks unless you turned the main journals down to the 292 size.
Clear as mud?
