Y-block distributor

I recently heard that the 289 distribitor body is interchangeable with the Y-block. To me, that's huge! That means I can use any one of a half dozen hot setups on my y-blocks; Duraspark, dual points, maybe even a EEC conversion!

I think the shaft from a y-block needs to be fitted but I think the distributor bodys will interchange.

Anybody know about this?

Close but no cigar Paul. However if you go to Advanced Auto they will give you the best of both worlds. It is a Ford aftermarket dizzie offered originally in 65 that uses the 289 O ring shaft style housing.

Last I checked ( a month ago) $51 included dizzie with points and condenser. NAPA gets around $90 for the same item. All the post 57 dizzies use the 289 style cap and rotor. I believe the FE was the same.

No longer any need to take care getting out the old one and hoping you can find a good one on E-Pay.

Thanks again, Carl. Excellent information. That may be close enough to be the same thing if I can adapt stuff like Duraspark into that housing. I'll do a 'net search on Advanced Auto.

Thanks Carl,

The Advance Auto guys are not much better than AutoZone, at least at my local stores.

Paul,

About two weeks ago I fitted the guts from a Duraspark distributor into a newer style distributor for a y block. (The one with the o-ring, like Carl said).

I haven't tested it yet, but everything fits right, except the wires. I had to cut a small piece on the y distributor to get them out were they should. I can send you pictures, if you want...

Best regards,
Lobo

Lobo,

Outstanding! Did you select a particular donor distributor, such as a Windsor, or does that not matter?

And, yes, a picture would be very much appreciated.

Paul,

I just used a distributor I had around here. It was from a 302W... That's the only Ford electronic distributor I have access to here.
I'll take some pictures this weekend. Just be patient… The pictures may take a while, because I don't have a digital camera....

Best regards,
Lobo

Lobo,

I just realized you're from Brazil. Don't worry about the pictures, that might be more difficult than I know. But if you can give a short verbal description, that will be enough for me to get started.

Thanks!

Paul,
It won't be a problem at all for me to take the pictures for you, and it will be a lot easier to do a step by step guide with the pictures. I don't even know how to explain it without the pictures. I wouldn't be able to do it in Portuguese and I think it will be even worse to try to explain it with my poor English...
To tell you the truth, a friend of mine was supposed to take pictures with his digital camera, but he didn't have the camera handy when I had both distributors apart.... That's why I don't have the pictures right now.
I'll explain to you everything. I'll even tell you how to test a used Duraspark distributor before you buy it. It's very, very simple.

Best regards,
Lobo

Update:

I’ve started to work on the distributor. I’m taking pictures and writing everything down as I do it. I don’t know if I’ll have enough time to finish it before Christmas, but I’ll try.

If you want to test it, all you need is an LED. Go to your favorite electronics store and buy a red one, since it’s easier to see.
Connect it to the purple and orange wires on the distributor (with the distributor disconnected from the car and everything else). Turn the shaft. If the LED blinks, it’s OK. If it doesn’t, reverse the wires (purple one where the organge was). If it still doesn’t blink, the magnetic pick-up is probably shot.
If want, I can post a drawing of the procedure…

Best regards,
Lucas (Lobo)
