Cool 97 psd stalls out

I just purchased a 97 F 350 4x4 about three weeks ago, it has 87,500 miles and has been very well cared for. Last week it began to show classic symptoms of cps failure, it would stall when it ideled, would sometimes be hard starting and it finally died on me on tuesday so i had no choice went to ford and picked one up and put it in and everything was great drove about 150 miles so far and tonite it up and died again about 15 min into my trip and would crank over but wouldn't even try to start. I waited 10 min. and it took right off and i drove it back home no problems, any suggestions?? I didn't run any codes yet and the first time it died i got a check engine light, tonite no check engine it just died like i turned the ignition off. I'm new to diesels so any input would be great. Thanks in advance, you guys are very helpfull to us newbies!!!

Everything is a shot in the dark with no codes. Have them read and post them. I'm sure we can help.

If you had been driving the truck, and assuming it was up to temp, then if it died and wouldn't restart it couldn't be your glow plugs. If the engine is up to temp, then the glow plugs aren't even needed. The only purpose of the glow plugs is to increase the temperature in the combustion chamber when the engine is COLD so that the diesel combusts under compression. Once the engine is at operating temperature, you could disconnect the glow plugs and it would still fire right up. Your problem is something else, PCM, CAMPS or fuel delivery.

Tried to get psd to the shop to read codes and she gave up again, they came out and read the codes--cps code left from first problem and now ipm code not enough oil pres. ---- oil level is fine they are leaning towards o-rings on the sensor any way had to tow it in with a chevy, how embarassing!! Thanks for your reply mech2161.

I just came back from the shop, now instead of two codes-- cps, ipm low oil pressure indacated (200lbs at cold starting)--- there are atleast 35 or more codes showing up??
This has me scratching my head maybe a short somewhere????????????? Starting to make me angry! Good thing i have a good mechanic working on it, independent not ford!

Update, it died for the shop after about 10 min at 1500rpm they pulled the codes again and only one showed up--icp sensor (i called it ipm before, my mistake) at this time they are installing new sensor and going to test it again, thanks for putting up with my learning curve! I'm used to older diesel tractors all mechanical!
