I would assume the 87 had the manual locking hubs. If they are, the switch is on the center of the wheel. It will say <- LOCK or FREE -> follow the arrow. If there isnt a switch there...you dont have 4wd. hope that helps
did he put it in 4wd low or high? if low when he shifts out of low gear(truck must be at a stop, foot on brake in neutral in order to shift) and shifts back to 2WD is the truck seem to still be in low gear?
If this transfer case is the same as used on the 89, borg warner 1356, the retainer for the oil pump has come out of the slot in the case and and it has crushed down into the gears. This is a engineering flaw with this transfer case, hope this isn't the same as yours as it will require pulling and rebuilding the transfer case and either rebuilding the slit in the case or replacing. Good luck
What part is still engaged, is it the transfer case, or front hubs?? Try this-
-Jack up truck and set on stands (front and back)
-Put tranny in neutral
-Spin front tires
see if anything else spins, if any of the drive shafts sping, double check to see that the front hubs are in the FREE position. If they are in FREE and the U-Joints at the hubs are spinning when you turn the wheel then you need to investigate the hubs.
-Check this for both sides on the front
If this checks out ok check to see that the transfer case is disengaged (still on jack stands)
-Put the transfer case in 2WD
-Get under truck and grab hold of the drive shaft from the transfer case to the front axle, try and spin it, if it moves freely then the transfer case is disengaged, if not try shifting transfer case in and out of 4wd 2wd and neutral. (This is a manual floor shift trans. case right?)
If it is a push button make sure ignition is on and tranny is in neutral then push the 4x4 button on the dash. Does the light go on and off??

Ya, I had that problem with my BW1356. If you look in my gallery you can see my solution to it.
