Tough on the drive line too. Your 4H to 2H shift is an electric clutch in the transfer case with the electronic control box mounted behind the glovebox. It sounds like you need a new control module. In the meantime, try unplugging at the box. I think the default state is 2H. When mine went, it would show 4H until I started moving and then go out. New module fixed it.
i've had the car for 6 - 7 months and the dealership i bought it from had the 4wd worked on because it would not work. it took them 5 months to figure out what was wrong they put a new 4wd module and the shift motor. ive been driving it for a couple months and my wife drove it today and called me and something is wrong when i make a sharp turn there is a popping noise. when i came home i looked at it and drove it. and i notice it was hard to drive. i tried putting in 4wd low and high and back to auto. and still won't change back to 4wd auto. i've read different post that people posted and tried there suggestions and it still in 4wd. i will go out and unplug the module and see if it changess. I will let you know if it did or not
I just went out and unplugged it and it went to 2wd. So tomorrow i will make a trip to the dealership and talk to the owner about this problem. He is gonna fix it. Because they have been working on this problem for 5 months and its getting old.
Another possibility is a wheel speed sensor. Wheel speed mismatch is what switches it from 4A to 4H. If the module is good, a sensor may be bad, but that should throw a code as well. The tone ring may be bent or corroded, thus giving a wrong wheel speed. It sounds like an SEP anyway, but something to consider.
That's what I meant by throw a code. The ABS light comes on (or flashes, I forget). Tone ring problems can give a dirty signal without the sensor being bad. You said the module was new, so I thought; if not that then what? I suppose the dash switch could be faulty as well.
Anyway: SEP

I called the dealership and asked them about it and was told it was a used control module from a junk yard. I don't know if that has anything to do with it. but why all of a sudden it gets stuck in 4wd. shouldn't have it done it when i first got it back from the garage?
By rear heat and A/C do you mean there are vents near the floor, or does it have the separate vents in the ceiling with rear controls? If rear controls, are they enabled and set to a cold temperature?
Do you, or have you in the recent past, noticed a clicking noise from the rear when the rear heat was on? There's a blend door in the rear that, like the front blend door, has a tendency to break and cause a loss of control over the air temperature.
