SO I start the truck and pull out of the driveway with half a tank, I let it warm up a little but it hasn't been that cold.I turn on the first street which is a 6% up slope and hit the gas, my truck gets about half way up the slope and coughs, then dies. I know what you're thinking.....cps. But no, it will still crank. So I let it roll down the hill and sit for a mintue and then start cranking....and cranking.....and cranking. Finally, it catches and coughs a bunch more times like it's been run out of fuel and then starts to run rough and finally evens out. Hmmmm.....that was wierd.
Next day, I let it warm up for a solid ten minutesand do the same thing and nothing happens. Next day, I let it warm up only about three minutes and it starts to die halfway up the hill. Do I baby it? Of course not, I am CWB. I floor it. It does nothing. Finally the fuel starts getting through and it runs like a champ.
Next few days, let it get nice and warm and it takes right off but today the wife drives it and it happens again. She has to sit for a few and crank it to death but finally it catches. No check engine light, Nada. Thoughts?
PS I have been out of town, new CWb adventures and sarcasm will be posted forthwith.
Do you have a 6.0? Dad's 03 6.0 did this same thing last week, I wasn't with him but what he discribed and what you discribe sound the same, except he said his sounded like it even backfired a couple times. I wondered if it had gelled just a bit and wasn't getting enough fuel, but he didn't think it was that. He's gettin it checked out to see what the deal was at Ford. He said he lost power trying to get on the interstate and could only run about 30 for a little while. Donno for sure, I'll let ya know what he finds out, best of luck.
Water in the gas maybe. You said it was goin up a hill and the other guy said it was goin on the on ramp. In that case, water may have settled at the pick up. Water is heavier than diesel and will settle at the bottom. Just an observation.
I've got a "03" SD 6.0 Lariat Dually that just turned 40K, and knock on Wood I've not had the same problem as you CWB. Hope you figure it out and get it fixed. Two things were mentioned in this post, water, and gelling. How well do these additives for water work? Also, at what temp should you use the additive for fuel gelling? Like tonight where I'm at it's supposed to go down to a low of 8 degrees. At what temp will diesel start giving you problems?
