In my 1996 Ford Explorer, im having a wierd problem. When my left turn signal is turned on the whole dash lights up, and sometimes the four ways go on.
When I turn on the trucks lights, then turn the left signal on, nothing happens, however, the left signal indicator is ALWAYS on; it dosnt blink.
My right signal seems to be functioning properly.
I was thinking maybe the flasher is shot, but i dont know if that would cause all these symptoms. Maybe a light is out and its shorting, though, i dont see any lights out.
I would suspect a short somewhere. Many have had to replace the multi-switch within the steering column for shorts. It sounds bad, but the part is only $35 at rockauto.com and the replacement isn't too hard. Just make sure you disconnect the battery and wait ten minutes before opening up the steering column: don't want to set off the air-bag!
Can anyone help me? I just replaced the signal lever on my 1998ford explorer and the new one is also not working properly. It won't engage or sounds like it is stuck or shorting out. I am planning to remove it and exchange for another but if you,ve had this problem maybe it isn't the part but perhaps a wiring or steering wheel issue that is inhibiting the part from operating correctly? The wipers and the brights features work it is just the signal right and left that don,t...frustrated
I recommend you take the old one apart and see if it was broken or not working. At least then you could confirm there is an issue with the multi-function switch. With mine, you could feel it in the lever that something was wrong with the switch. Access to a wiring diagram always helps in diagnosing electrical problems.
I wonder if the mechanics that kick off the turn signal could cause the damage. It is almost always the turn signal portion that goes wrong, and the slider is physically damaged. Of course, it could be that they break first because they are used more than the other portions and features of the switch.
But if it happens again immediately, I wonder if something else is causing the damage to it. You might be right, there could be something else going on.
