I'm looking to order a 2005 F-250 shortly. This truck will be used as a part time work truck and a full time daily driver. I'm having trouble deciding between the V-8 and V10.
In addition to being my daily driver....this will also be my toy. I plan on doing some bolt on engine/exhaust mods to make it faster and funner (I realize its not a race car....).
Is the V-10 much faster then a V-8? I cant seem to find 0-60 times anywhere....but I guess thats not why people buy these trucks.
Are there the same amount of bolt on mods for both?
How about gas milage.....is the 10 much worse then the 8?
Thanks for any help.
i've got one coming, 250 4x4 larait v10 for 600 more how can you go wrong.the v10 and 5.4 are close to each other on mpg's ask the guys down in the v10 area you will be glad you did. good luck with your choice
It would be kinda silly to order a new Super Duty and not get the V-10, I have drove 3 new '05's with the 5.4 and they were all dogs, V-10 and 4.10's or 4.30's are the only way to go...
I just ordered a 250 V10 using similar criteria as you're using, and I thought that the $600 option was a no brainer. Remember, gas mileage is only relative.
Milage is the same, my 5.4 gets 12 on the best of days, all the V-10 guys I know get the same, it's not really even $600 if you think about it, more like $510 if your A-plan.
I have the V10 in an 05 250. Just broke through 500 miles today...
- I haven't gotten anywhere near 12 mpg. Tanks 1,2,3 were 9, 10, 9.5mpg respectively. It's all city driving, stop, go, little freeway. Maybe it'll get better as it breaks in? I'm not counting on it.
- Plenty of power. This thing gets up and goes. I'm sure I could peel out if I pushed the throttle down hard enough (I've been pretty easy on it so far).
I'd get the V10 again. I can't imagine what the V8 would feel like. Just prepare yourself for single digit mileage. Given the mileage I drive (around 5000k a year) I figure it's costing me around $300 more than a diesel and maybe $100 more than the V8 annually.
I get 12 to 12.5mpg running the city and a little hwy, I've gotten up to 14mpg running the interstate (no load) at 75 to 80 mph...pulling a 20ft bass boat from 70 to 80 around 11 to 11.5mpg.,, 10 mpg pulling a 37 foot fifth wheel RV..If you do it right, you can light up the rear tires..(dually)---01 f350 sd V10--with 430 rear
I can't speak for the new V10's. My last truck was a V10 though. One of my buddies is a V10 and we work with a guy with a V8. The 3 of us were cosistently getting the same mileage (around 12 with some city and some highway and up to 14 or 15 on highway trips). As the others have said go with the V10, it is a great motor. Also of note our V10's (an 02 and an 03) seemed to get worse mileage until 20K was on the odometer. Before that it would vary quite a bit, after that it was pretty consistent.
Spend 600 bucks for the V-10. A truck this big needs a large powerplant. There are times that I wish my diesel was running a tune. I can't imagine driving a 5.4L.
Just my opinion, I am not debating the fact that the V-8 will move the SD, I just prefer more power.
I have an '05 5.4 and am very happy with it. For my uses it has plenty of power. I bought the truck off the lot. It was equiped how I wanted and the price was alright. That being said, if I had to order the truck or if there were similar trucks on the lot with both engines, for the small price difference and minimal milage difference, definently go with the V-10. BTW, mine is a 6 speed, I don't know what the 5.4 auto is like.
i drove a 250 4x4 with a 5.4 as a demo ride. what a dog . could not beleive it was a ford. i mean as i drive many cars every day as a dealer mechanic a diesel vdub could run away from a 250 5.4. i'm glad i ordered the v10.

Was it an '05 with the newer 5.4 or was it an older one?? Again, I agree that for the small $$ difference the V-10 is the better deal, buy my 5.4 doesn't seem anywhere near as bad as the one you drove.
I test drove a 5.4L 2005 F250 Scab short bed a few weeks ago, and was surprised how much power it had -- I was expecting it to be gutless, but it definetly wasn't -- it had plenty of pep. For being the "base" engine, the 3V 5.4L is pretty good, definitely not a "dog" IMO.
If you want to drive a "dog" test drive a 4.6L V8 2005 scab F150. Bow wow.
