i drove a 250 4x4 with a 5.4 as a demo ride. what a dog . could not beleive it was a ford. i mean as i drive many cars every day as a dealer mechanic a diesel vdub could run away from a 250 5.4. i'm glad i ordered the v10.
As a mechanic you should already now that a 3000# car should run away from 7000# truck.
'04'v10-310hp, '05'v8-300hp and sure the torque is different, but if your saying the '05' is a dog, than I am thinking the '04' -'99' v-10's are pretty doggish like the '05' v8's. Or maybe you can explain what makes the truck a "dog" at 300 hp, granted my '05' wiegh's9000# w/tools and can run the highways at the posted speed limit's and than alot more. And no problem getting the beast rolling from the start. Now if are suppose to race the truck ,your right it's a dog. But it couldn't be because it a truck at 9000#?
And this post is not to start a war of your v10 is bigger than my v8,I now that already. Just wondering if can actaully explain how you feel the power is a dog?
I vote for the V-10 but if you are looking at doing extensive engine mods anyway, the 5.4 would be a better way to go. The aftermarket parts availability is better and are less expensive. I wouldnt call the V-10 a dog by any stretch of the imagination but you know what they say. More is better.
well i have an 04 with the 5.4 and it is not a dog. true i couldn't race a v-10 but it has plenty of pep for me, it will spin the rears from a standing start with the 3.73s. true the gas mileage is not that different sure i would love to have the 10 but the 8 is no dog!
I have had both in my 2003 Superduties. The V-10 is far more fun to drive and doesn't suck much more gas than did my 5.4 The V-10 is a 4X4 and the 5.4 is a 4X2. Other than that they are identical.
Yesterday I took it up some steep mountain grades and the V-10 cruises effortlessly up them. The 5.4 I had to kick down a lot more times. I'm not knocking my 5.4 at all, understand. It's just that the V-10 flattens the grades so much more easily.
I took my 5.4 to the Utah Uintas up to 11,000' towing a 30 foot Mallard travel trailer and it did admirably...but the V-10 will be doing that for me from now on.
My 5.4 on the road got 15.5 mpg My V-10 gets 15 mpg if I can keep it at 70 mph
Forget exhaust mods unless you just like burning your money or have it to burn. I'd supercharge it before I'd toss my money away on headers that don't give much back. Sound is cool, but that's all.

i have a v8 in my 03 f250 sc sb, and it doesnt seem that bad to me at all. i have never driven in a v10 so i cant compare but if i were to order a new truck i would probably pay the extra 600 and get the 10, just casue u can never have to much power. for now though and my needs the v8 does great. also someone above commented that the v10 is a 4x4 and teh v8 is a 4x2, my v8 is a 4x4.

Wow, thanks for all the information guys.... looks like I will be going with the V-10. I'm so happy I found this web site. I've learned more then I ever could have by reading through tons of posts here over the last few days.
Thanks again.
I topped off my fuel tank friday morning and headed up into the mountain ski resorts. Did a lot of around-town driving up there. Topped out at 8,300 feet. Came home and ran errands around town. Ran the truck thru the carwash, then fueled it up. Total trip was 195 miles. Miles per gallon: 13.5. I think that's awesome for the power this truck has.
Get the V10, it will work less harder than a V8 to move the pickup weigh and you will have more power to haul big load. I love my 2003, F350 SD SRW,with a V10 engine; If I would have to buy new truck today, I would get the same options.
