My 91 2.3 four cylinder runs smooth, then acts like it is running on 2 cylinders, then runs smooth. I have changed plugs and wires, but this did not fix the problem. also, check engine light goes on and off at different times. Any ideas??
I would start by pulling the codes and testing fuel pressure. I have more information on how this is done in the tech info thread at the top of the forum.
I do not see anything that says technical info thread. I guess I don't know what to look for. Is there someplace I can find out what things mean, like MAF. I am so new to this internet search stuff. I appreciate any help.

here is the link for the technical info thread. the thread is fixed so it always stays at the top of the first page. it says Read this: in bold red letters before it.
the MAF stands for Mass Air Flow. it is a sensor that is mounted on the air tube right next to the air filter box.
pull the codes and check the fuel pressure first, like ken said, before messing with the MAF sensor. after you click the link above, look for "Pulling EEC-IV codes" about halfway down the page and click on it.
I found a code reader on sale at Autozone.
If I followed the directions correctly, I found the following codes.
18
28
32
38
88
98
Any ideas where I should start.
18 = Bad tach signal
28 = not a valid code for your truck
32 = EGR code, bad EVP or EVR
38 = not a valid code for your truck
88 = A4LD converter clutch override solenoid
98 = KOER code, did not pass KOEO test
You should run the pinpoint tests for the codes before replacing components.
I will re-check the codes tomorrow. I drove the truck around town today and it ran smooth. If I was working on my 1960 Austin Healey, I would be looking for a loose wire to the coil or points. I have checked all connections and they seem tight. I guess I am looking for something simple, because it is an intermittent problem.
I cleared the codes last night and rechecked them this morning.
This is the codes in order.

I don't know if it matters, the problem is on my 91 Ranger, standard cab, 5 speed manual transmission.
Any ideas.
