I was fiddling with the wires from my alternator a few days ago, and i can't remember how they go back. I have three wires. one big Black and orange one which I didnt mess with. then i have a white/black wire and a orange blue wire. I tested the orange blue, and it seems to be the ground, but my chiltons says to put it on the field terminal. I really need to get this hooked up right, so any help would be appreciated

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 20-Aug-02 AT 10:12 PM (EST)]Hey Philip!
Man you came to the right place for info! If you scroll on down the message board you`ll see a post that has " How many wires?" . It`s a wiring diagram to the alt. It`s also a life saver. Thanks to franklin2!
I had my field wire run to the ground and it was shorting my system out. I finally got it right and it`s stayed charged every since. The orange and blue is definatly the field--marked "F" on the volt. reg. & marked "FLD" on your alt. The hot wire comes from the silinoid. The "Batt"(hot) and the "FLD" are side by side and the "GRND" is kinda off to itself. I had to run my own ground because i din`t have one. Check out the diagram , you`ll see. Good Luck !!! Will

Thanks for the diagram. I hooked the wires up as shown, but still no luck. if i wanted to measure the voltage coming out of my alternator with a voltmeter, where on the alternator would i put my probes?

I realize that you can test the charging system by putting a volt meter on the battery terminal. I have done this numeral times and it doesnt seem to be charging properly. My question is where should i put my leads on the alternator itself to make sure that the wiring is at fault, not the alternator itself. Maybe someone has some suggestions for bench testing an alternator? Sorry for the misunderstanding and thanks for ya'lls help.

Hey Phillip!! Man I sure hope you get everything worked out!! Maybe the alt. is junk! I bought an alt. from a parts house, went home and put it on for nothing. The diodes were bad or maybe didn`t even have any!! Your best bet is to bring it to the auto store and let them bench test it. Their machine can tell you exactly what is wrong with the alt. !! As for as testing the wires, I don`t have a clue. But, I know the other way works. Have `em test the new one before you leave!! Just a few brain storms!! Good Luck
Thanks for all your help guys... i finally found the problem, and it had nothing to do with me. Carquest sent me a faulty alternator, so i just swapped in a new one and she charges great now.
