My 1996 F250 developed this obnoxious noise soon after I installed my Tymar intake. The truck actually starts to hum when you try to hold the throttle anywhere at or below 1500rpm to maintain a constant speed. As soon as you start accelerating the noise disappears and once you are over 1500rpm it is no longer there. My neighbor and I held the truck's idle at 1500rpm while I was listening under the hood and it seemed that the noise was coming from the driver's side of the engine, about where the intake is. At first I thought the intake was to blame for this but with further investigation it no longer seems suspect. Has anyone ever experienced anything like this or have any suggestions for me?
yep, same thing happened to me when i put a home made tymar on there.... It's just your EBPV cycleing on and off.... how cold is it where you are??? and does the sound go away once the engine is all warmed up?? if it's below 37, then it's prob just the valve... you can disconnect it if you want.... let me know and i'll direct you to the wonderfull picture that kwikkordead took of it's exact location!
THIS ADDED: Also even when it's warmed up, there is a distinctly louder tone than normal... hope this helps
You all should hear a VW diesel with it's air filter removed. So loud you can hardly think. And it's only a 1.6 liter. Our Powerstrokes are 7.3L! There's going to be some noise with an open intake. I say that to make a point that all diesels have no throttle plate to quiet the throbbing intake sound that is developed with the intake valves opening and closing as they go about thier work. Really the only way to quiet your truck back down is to completly enclose the filter with a housing.
I'm pretty sure Robbgt nailed it on the head. It's in the 20's here in Virginia and the noise does disappear after the engine is fully warmed up. Do you all think disconnecting the EBPV will eliminate the noise prior to the engine being at full operating temperature? Also would there be any negative effects if the EBPV was disconnected?

I have had mine disconnected for a while now (also because it sounded like crap w/ my stright piped exhuast) and it just takes a little longer to warm up.. it eliminated the sound on my truck.... other that that it just gives you a little more power in the mourning so you can get out of the way of a semi comming down the road!! hope this helps....

Robbgt, I need some information. My 02 7.3L is making this same humming noise coming from the drivers side. I put new airfilter, fuel filter and checked all hoses, still making noise. The thing that is worrying me is that it is making the noise after it is warmed up. Last night I took a 45 mile trip on the interstate thinking when I got to me turn off the engine would be hot enought to not make the noise, STILL MAKES NOISE, do you think it is the EBPV or is the EBPV stuck shut. I have owned this truck for over a year and last winter I don't remember hearing this noise. The noise occur when I accelorate to about 30 and above, if I let of the throttle and let the engine come to a idle while I'm coasting you can hear the humming noise louder. What advice could you give me. Thank You.

Yea it could be that your EBPV is getting stuck.... try disconnecting it and see if it helps.... mine when it was disconnected would go through 2 stages... a loud as **** stage, with the EBPV on, and a second "stage" when the ebpv shut off... the motor is still louder than normal as well as the turbo... if you disconnect it and this takes care of the problem, then you should be all set... hope this helps...
