Hey everyone I have some more questions about the 351 C. First what is the approx. stock horsepower and torque for a 351C 2V? Also would it be benificial to swap it for my 351W HO in my 86' F-150? Or just rebuild the 351W? Also i have followed tips on how to identify a 351C including the canted valves, the valve covers, and the plate over the front of the motor, but it cleary says 351M on the pistons, I take it there interchangable? Thanks for the help.
Engine Identification (rev):
======================
351C/M/400 335 series: 8 bolts in rectangular valve covers. Timing chain housing is part of block. Thermostat housing on block. Exhaust bolt holes diagonal.
351M/400 335 series: intake is 12.7" wide the 351C is narrow.
351W/302/5.0L 6 bolts on trapezoidal valve covers. Thermostat housing on intake. Exhaust bolt holes horizontal.
429/460 385 series: 7 bolts in rectangular valve cover
352/360/390/427/428 FE series: Intake goes under valve covers.
There are other indicators but these may help.
351M and 351C pistons can NOT be interchanged. You may have a 351M instead of a 351C. The 351M will not bolt up to the transmission from a 351W.
At first site the 351c, 351M and the 400 are the same but the big difference between the 351m and 400 against the 351c is the bell hosing. The bell housing of the 351c uses a small transmission like the 351w,302 and 289. The bell housing of the 351m and 400 uses a bigger transmission like the 429 and 460.
Hope the info is helps you.

Jesse, re-read Eric's response. It says M's and C's both have 8 bolt valve covers, in fact the heads are interchangeable as are lots of other parts. The C has a noticably narrower intake manifold because of it's lower deck height, but if you haven't seen the two side by side it can be difficult to tell them apart.
You may want to find a casting # on the block, if it indicates a casting after 1974, you can be sure it's an M. I believe the heads (if they're original) will have an "M", a "2" or a "4" cast on one of the corners to denote M-block or 2 or 4 barrel Cleveland heads. You don't have a sticker on the valve covers?
No...you probably have a 351M with 351M heads. All 335 series engines have canted valves and the 351C 2V and 351M/400 heads are basically identical. Unless you can find some casting numbers on the heads it's almost impossible to tell the 2 apart.
