351w to 460 Swap?

Hey yall im considering this summer when i have money to swap out in my 351w to a 460. Now the question is is there a HUGE difference in power between a 351w and a 460. My main thing is POWER i dont care bout mpg. The 351w seems like a powerful loud motor and thats cause mines pure stock and it seems as that if i were to throw in a CAI and some headers and a chip it would be way more powerful. So whats yalls opinions on what i should do? Oh and my transmission is a C6. Thanks!

Alrighty, so, the 460 is going to have a bit more power, depending on how you set it up, and what year 460 you get. I would put in a Carb 460 as opposed to EFI, simply for the ease of installation. however, putting in a 460, as compared to freshening up a 351w is going to be costly either way. Theres quite a bit that can be done to make power with the 5.8, headers, intakes, like you said. The other big thing would be a cam, and port and polished heads. the heads on these particular motors are very restrictive and if you get them opened up, it makes a real difference.

"Beefing up" a 351 is like welding huge brass ***** onto a Chihuahua.............Just go with the Pitbull (460) from the get go and build from there if you want raw "power".

I drove a buddys 95 F250 with a 351 last week and it was pretty gutless compared to my 96 460 powered truck........just saying.

Id stick with a 351. We can make cute comparisons, or we can talk serious. He's already got a 351. its not like were starting from no motor here. You can make a screaming small block for fairly cheap, and there is a TON of aftermarket parts for windsors. hell, he could put in a 408 stroker, have a much lighter motor, and push a ton of power. of course a 5.8 is gonna feel different than a 7.5, but i could put 3.08 gears behind a 460, and 4.56's behind a 351 and youre gonna think that the 460 is a gutless motor based on that.

GNR22 is right. Stick with the 351W. If you have a 460 with the transmission laying around and everything already sitting there just needing to be swapped in, that is a different story. However if you don't have it laying around, stick with the 351. Convert it to MAF, and go ballistic with the cam. Get GT40 Heads, a good set of gears, 4.10, 4.56, I'd prefer a C6 transmission or a ZF5, and make the 351 scream. ^_^ Yeah BBF's are powerhouses, but if you don't have one lying around, no point in buying it, doing a swap, and then wondering why it's only got a bit more umph.
JMHO However, in the end, you'll do what you want. I think a 408 stroker would be beast though.

Invest your money in the heads, GT40's barely flow enough for mustangs. Low buck irons are your best bet for a truck, Roush, Sr. Jr. etc. extrude hone the upper, cam with lots of lift, short duration, good bump in compression and you're set.

That engine will easily run 10's in a mustang, plenty for a truck.

I put a 460 in my F150 and I've been underwhelmed by the power it makes.

What year is the truck? The '94+ motors are a bit more powerful as delivered but regardless of year you're nowhere close to seeing what the motor is capable of until the stock cam is replaced and the complete exhaust system is exchanged for longtubes and a good single or duals. There is no replacement for displacement(well actually there is it's called a blower), but a 460 also require a different trans and beefier axle so this is more of a complete powertrain swap than an engine swap. In comparison the Windsor has hugh aftermarket support so you could be well ahead of a stock 460 in HP if you put the engine swap money into your current smallblock.

460 heads are also very expensive, as re the rest of the parts needed to make power. 351w parts are everywhere.

I'm building a 5.8 right now for my '68 Bronco crawler.

Stat's:
'94 F4TE roller block
stock rods, pistons, crank
Comp 35-308-8 roller cam
Edelbrock RPM alum heads (2.02/ 1.60 valves)
1.6 ratio Scorpion full roller rockers
GT-40 extrude honed Lightning lower intake
GT-40 upper w/ 65mm BBK throttle body
88-93 Mustang MAF fuel injection
A9L EEC
24# injectors

I've got less than $2K invested in all these parts and some of which you already have (the engine) and others you won't need (intakes)! I've got over $600 in those two items alone on the list above.

Looking forward to getting this rig together as it should be a real powerhouse! NP-435 trans, 203/ 205 doubler with 4.88 gears and Detroit lockers front/ rear all in a small 1968 Bronco package...
