which do you like better offroad metallic or organic.
i'm putting a 4speed in the rig and am trying to decide which to go with centerforce stage 2 or df 36" swampers and 3.50 ratio is the setup for now on half ton running gear. open to other options aswell
As long as its a high quality clutch, I don't really have a preference. The important thing is clutch size. Stock, mine takes a 10" clutch and I had the flywheel drilled out to accept a 12" (or was it 13"?) clutch. Anyways, the extra diameter is the biggest factor between a solid run and smoking your clutch...provided you use a good brand clutch. I think mine may have been Mcleoud. Damn memory...
yea definately try to go for the larger one....i can smoke my centerforce stage 1 clutch just after 60 feet of muck with 35" tires and a inline six...bTW i run an 11"
I like running organic discs with higher rated pressure plates. Smoother engagement and a semi-heavy pedal.
You can also run a metallic with a fairly stock pressure plate and achieve the same thing, just depends on how heavy of a clutch pedal you prefer.
In my Volkswagens(i know it's not a 4x4, but it still applies) whenever i ran stock components I'd cook the clutch, and if i ran a full out street/strip clutch it wouldn't slip enough to daily drive. I had to find a balance so I ran a stock disc and about a 1800lb pressure plate (stock is about 900lbs). It'd give good slip on start, but once it hooked up there was no way to overpower it. I ran this in a street car and offroad. (these pressures in no way directly relate to our trucks, stock we run somewhere around 2300 lbs, but it does show heavier plates help ALOT)
When it comes time to replace the clutch in the truck I'm going to run a stock disc and a stage 2 or 3 pressure plate, IMO the 300 just doesn't have enough power to need that much clutch.
I have an 11" Centerforce 3 & haven't had a problem in mud, or in rocks. Best clutch I've ever had.
Are you running the dual friction disk? The speed shop I bought mine from said the only difference between the stage 2 and the stage 3 was the disk itself. Any ideas?
Buy one for a diesel truck of the same year. I converted a Chevy from diesel to 400 Small block. I had the 400 flywheel drilled for the diesel clutch. That was a pretty strong motor and I pulled some pretty big loads with it. It never chattered or anything else bad. It took all the abuse I could throw at it and then some. For you FE and 460 guys, look up the 13" industrial ones. You have to work pretty hard to get one that has the right center, most are for 1 1/2 shafts. I found one for 1 1/8 a long time ago. They also have the Long style plates with a much heavier duty throwout bearing.
As for metallic or organic. If you run in the dirt and water, I'd stick with organic. They seem to deal with dirt a little better and they don't chatter. Metallic all the way for drag's though.
