Last jan 04 I had my 99 7.3 at the local ford stealership to replace the water pump [119000 mi]. At this time they did their 'complete vehicle inspection' or whatever they call it, and determined I had an oil leak at the rear of the engine. Asked the service mech how much to fix. His reply was that they have to pull the engine to replace this particular seal. I had always had a drop of oil on the drain plug from change one, I just assumed I didnt tighten it enough. Of course the truck had been in their hands at least 2 times before the engine was out of warranty, one was a trans service, engine under warranty, guess they cant see the oil all over the back half of the pan until its out of warranty. Mech told me as long as I dont mind a few drops of oil on the pavement, dont worry. Now to my question- I am going to mod the truck w/ an intake, exhaust, and chip or programmer. Do you think the added HP, etc will make the leak worse than it is? Thanks
If its the rear main you don't need to remove the engine!!! You remove the tranny! Anyways i can't see the mods making it any worse. I have an oil leak on my 99.5 as well. I think it is possibly the rear main as well but not sure. As for the repair i will do it myself. Good luck with you mods!!
When i replaced my clutch, i replaced the rear main oil seal and it helped a little. I think my problem was leaking alittle around the oil pan. I now have a valve cover that is leaking and unless im under the truck looking up, it looks like a rear main oil seal. Have them check what kwikkordead said though.
