This should be an easy one for somebody. I haven't jacked with a speedo problem for ten years and am drawing a blank. Actually, I don't think the speedo is the problem. Here's what I got.
VDO guages came with my truck. Not certain what model but I believe the Cockpit Series. Auto calibrating speedo. Anyway, it was rigged up for Turbo 350 before and I am just getting around to hooking it up to the 71 Ford C-4. No instructions but I believe I downloaded the correct ones and have verified wiring now. The guage will do it's sweep test when ignition is powered up. (But it seems to do that even when the wiring was jerked up). To the point. I'm not sure I got all I need to run it yet.
The drive gear is present in the tranny. It has no driven gear (never did since I bought it). I have a common 3 wire Hall Effect switch for a newer Ford. I am thinking I need a speedo driven gear? Do you use a regular old style teflon gear with a hall effect? Or does it take a different one. I don't think I am getting a signal. I haven't verified the Hall Effect with my VOM yet, but it's brand new so lets assume it's good for the moment. I don't see how the thing could be spinning the way it is set up now.
I would think that it needs a speedo driven gear. But that's just my opinion. I don't recall ever seeing a metal driven gear. I think they're teflon just in case the speedo cable seizes and doesn't strip the drive gear. I'd contact VDO and see what they say. Something has to drive the HES. Good luck.
