Question best towing mod for your 73-79

I saw that on the X forum and thought I would ask it here because I have a 78 f250.
I would say that my best towing mod is the NP 435 granny tranny fallowed closely by the D60 3.73 trk loc diff, then the rear leaf springs, then the HD 460 V8 coils up front,
all installed by me to make towing a little better. I'm just looking for more ideas?

heavy duty front and rear sway bars would help, 4.10 gears are also nice. Mabye airbags on the rear axle to help the springs.

Tell us the story behind that...
As for towing mods, airbags are pretty good to have. And things everyone else has mentioned. Engine mods dont hurt either, cant have to much power

Story....Well..... My tranny went out (C6) and it was loaded onto a trailer pulled by a 78 F150 2wd 351m with no trailer brake controls ( I didnt like the idea but he was supposed to go slow) and the truck started down a hill and couldnt stop the trailer and everything went upside down at 50mph. I got to watch my 2 years of work and $8000 flip off the trailer and land upside down in the highway (I was following in a Bronco). When I got my 76 Highboy to drive while the 77 is getting restored, it came with trailer brakes and my dad said the control was in the way and I said BS were leaving it there !

Trailor brakes are definate. Also, a good trailor brake system is important. The Prodigy is a good one. I have one in my 74 that is the cheap pendulin type and it sucks. It will work intermittently. Hills affect its reliability. Go Prodigy or something comparable! I will take the loss on my cheap one that I just bought last summer and trade it for Prodigy.

Ford Pickup 460, Sorry for your loss. It looks like she was a sweet ride.

Wow, that's terrible... I agree, it's WAY more important to stop than go fast...

A great upgrade on my F150 was to do the brake upgrade with the T-bird calipers and the F350 brake booster.

Next will come some Helliwig helper springs.

Hey GeneStoner, why don't you pop into the NW forum and say hi?

Trailer Brakes get my vote

That looks like a lot of TLC went into it before the crash....I'd be heartbroken. I'm restoring a '79 F-250, and I just re-did the rear wire harness, working a 4 wire trailer connector into it. After seeing your truck, I think I'll rewire it for a 7 pin so I can put electric brakes on the trailer. I just have to figure out how to wire the charging circuit for the breakaway battery. Sorry about your truck.....Bill

Wow LX, you recommend the 9" rear end for a towing rig?

Most dudes would say a Dana 60 or better...
