Cooling system screwed??

I recently bought a 1980 F100 I6 and I'm trying to get it all cleaned up. Everything looks OK excepth the cooling system. It has a lot of deposits, especially up in the head area. It was getting pretty hot before. Under the valve cover there was a thick layer of baked on oil. What is a good way to clean out all the deposits? I'm gonna need something strong. I went to autozone and found some prestone cooling system cleaner that removes rust. Will this do or is there something that would work better? Thanks.

Well, the best way is to completely drain the cooling system and flush it out with a hose and maybe some radiator flush. It usually tells you how to do this on the back of most antifreeze bottles. As for the caked on oil, that is usually a common sight on older engines and the real way to clean it is to remove the cylinder head. Yet a little bit of oil build up on a head is nothing to worry about in an older engine. Good Luck.

If you want to get caked oil off of parts that can be removed from the engine then get some power clean or any type of strong degreaser and let is soak for a while. When I bought my 81 F100 there was oil caked in the valve covers real bad, I soaked it and then sand blasted the inside.

I took the head off and used B12 and a powerwasher to spray it off. That cleaned it good. Thanks for the radiator flushing tips. One more question. I think the rocker arms are a little worn. They don't really move much up and down but they rattle side to side a little. And I can hear them at higher RPM. Is this a big problem? I don't really have the time to fix it right now but I don't want anything to explode. How serious is this? Thanks

You have another thread about the rockers.

It's better there than here.
