Cleaning carbon deposits

I've been breaking down my brothers truck to experiment and just learn more about engines and i just pulled off the throttle body(btw its an 85 f150 302 fi) and intake manifold and i went to autozone and the guy recommended using chemtool b-12 cleaner on the throttle body and that worked like a charm and all the deposits just sprayed right off. He recommended soaking the manifold in mineral spirits, a kind of paint thinner. I tried this and it ended up costing 40 bucks or so which i find reasonable but the results were not. The mineral spirits removed a little of it but nothing compared to the b-12. I was wondering what you all think is the best way to remove all the deposits especially getting down into the manifold where i cant reach.

when the engine is running, I use water into the carb or throttle body, when tore down nothing works like a hot tank.

Seafoam work great.http://www.seafoamsales.com/deepCreepConsumer.htm , the only problem with cleaning high carbon deposit areas, is the carbon is going go down the exhaust pipes and settle in the oxygen sensor and the catylitic converter. When you use this stuff, after take the truck for a long ride and try to keep it at the higher rpm's with out getting a traffic viotation ticket (use the lower gears on trans), this will help to remove the carbon build up from the exhaust system.

Some things that worked for me, but while the engine was running...

Rubbing Alcohol will work, and will also absorb water in the fuel so it will burn. Marvel mystery oil in the gas and oil works good too. If you have a sticky valve, put some marvel mystery in her and it will clean her up good.

After any cleaning job like that with the engine running, there is a chance of fouling the o2 sensor and plugging the catalitic converter.

Good luck

We used to use this stuff from GM called Top Engine Cleaner.

It came either in a spray or liquid form (in a pop top can).

It worked great.

When I worked in a GM parts department, we had other non-GM dealers buy this stuff from us.

Maybe it's still available.

Here are the old part numbers:

1052626 (spray version)

1050002 (pour into carb vwersion)

I'm sure these part numbers have been changed and hopefully not discontined.
