I have a 99 (may or june) C/C PSD with a K&N filter . Just past 100300 miles. With in the last 5-600 miles I have started to notice a noise coming from the engine area when accelerating mainly up hills. It almost sounds like the turbo is having problems and then kicks in except that I can hear the whine of the turbo over the noise. The noise only lasts for a second or two before going away and then there are no problems with getting power to finish the climb or the hill. Or is this a problem with my air filter and I just need to get it cleaned?
Could my turbo be having problems? If so how do I check for sure? How much does it cost to replace and if I need to replace should I also get gauges to go with it?
I think I may have the same problem. My 1995 F350 Powerstroke makes a grinding, or an exhaust leak noise going up hills, but only when I turn to the right (I think it is the right, or maybe to the left). It seems to only occur when under a load. If I let off the accelerator, it stops. I do not lose power, just the noise gets louder when I accelerate going up a hill and turning the wheel in the direction that I can not rememeber. Is this similar to your engine noise? Thanks.

i had to replace the manifold gaskets on my buddies '02 SD.
same deal, sounds a little different than a gas job that leaks there.
