i have a 03 f-250 6.0. i have had the truck at three different dealerships for the same problem and have got no where. i,m starting to loose faith here. it started this past summer goin up hill towing my boat (boat and trialer are about 1500lbs) the truck started to surge and make a popping noise and lost all power. the popping sounds like its coming through the turbo. the problem is this, now it does it not towing a thing on a level road. it only does it every once and a while though so every one says the same thing. we cant fix whats not broke. their are never any codes and the check engine light has never come on for this problem. also the truck does not to seem to be making the same power as it did before. it used to take off from a stop light and i thought the body was coming off the frame. now you really need to stomp on it to get it going. two dealerships mechanics told me that the turbo,s were notorious for being bad but the dealerships would only replace them if it were a last ditch effort. and hell froze over. any help would be greatly appriciated.
I had basically the same problem that took three techs to pinpoint.
My problem was a wire chafe issue. One tech took all the harnesses off and still didn't find it. I found a good tech that know exactly where to check and fixed the problem. My 2004 truck has not surged since. Seems to me there is a TSB for surging that specifically points to chafing and locations.
One of the folks alot smarter than I will chime in soon. It may come down to simply finding a tech with the knowledge of this problem. Good luck and keep us posted.
That could also be sticking turbo vanes. There is a procedure for taking the turbo apart and cleaning the carbon from the vanes and other components in the turbo.
