Shorty Headers

I know that this is an exhaust topic but it is specific to this year of trucks. Any one out there tried installing shorty headers in their 77-79 4X4's with a 351M/400 engine? I am aware that there are manufactures of long tube headers out there but with long headers the left side collector ia a long ways back towards the transmission cross member and in a desire to keep things neat and clean under the 4X4 trucks you need to route the left side exhaust to the right side until you are past the transfer case. I'm also not interested in running fenderwell exit headers, been there, done that. My idea is to run dual exhaust pipes through the opening between the transfer case and right frame rail while staying above the transmission cross member. I then want to go into a flowmaster dual in/single out muffler and out the back like stock exhaust. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

just replace my headers on a 400

when i change my old headers out and put the new onces in, i noticed i what i ordered looked different then what i baught. my 79 f250 4x4 400 had shorty headers on it. i replaced them with full length headers... it looks like crap. i ahd to run pipeing under the crossmember for the transfor case (yikes i know)... i will eventually replace the full length headers with shorty headers (ive got bigger issues to worry about).... shortys make it look neater and wont hurt. that will be fine running the exhaust like that.... thats how mine was before i changed out the headers... only i have straight duals.... not a problem at all!

You've got the same plan as I do. I'm going to run shorty headers (I'm looking into these right now: http://www.sandersonheaders.com/pagesbypartnum/fc3.htm) then 2 1/4 inch duals into a single flowmaster and 3 inch out the back.

I've looked at the same ones too but I have concerns over the 1 7/8" primary tube dia. These are made for 4V heads and ports and those big tubes can raise havoc with bottom end torque. Maybe I'll talk to Sanderson and see if they can put them together with 1 5/8" primary tubes.

I dont have a 400 but I installed hedman long tube headers on my 360 highboy and so far haven't had any problems. The collectors are really close to the crossmember but the have just enough clearance to get by. Again I don't know how much different a 400 is, thats just my two cents worth!
Good luck on yor project.

Ohmanomanoman!! You have NO idea how long i've been looking for something like these!! I could find long-tube headers no problem, but NEVER shorties! I have a 77 F-350 RV with a 460, and I needed to make torque, not high-end HP!! jasond5150, THANK YOU FOR THAT LINK!!!!!!
