1986 Ford Bronco XLT, 302 EFI.
Was on my way to pick up some new doors for my truck when I lost heat inside the cab, temp gauge spiked and finally lost fluid out the radiator. It was -8 degrees out side, 50+mile trip...I was stuck in the middle of no where...luckily coasted to the nearest Kwik Trip.
Found that it was indeed leaking out the seams of the radiator. Change the radiator last night (also scored myself a new fan shroud and pulled a 3G 130amp alt for future swap). Anyway, got the rad put in and shroud put on everything hooked up. Took it out for a test drive. warmed up real nice, then lost cabin heat and then the temp gauge started to drop...puzzled! Do I need a new T-stat? I have a 190 in there right now that is only 2-3 years old. Thinking about going to a 205. Any ideas??
Sounds like a massive air pocket in the system. Probably didn't rear its ugly head until the t-stat opened. If the old radiator was leaking as you say you could have lost more coolant than was initially visible. Try starting it cold with the radiator cap off and filling it while it warms up. when the thermostat opens the level in the radiator should drop some. Top it off once that happens and fill the expansion tank. recap the radiator and see what you get.

Will do. Just for good measure I am planning on getting a 205 degree T-stat.
I higher rated T-stat will help warm up the Bronco faster for all the short, but cold trips I take around town. I'm only 3 miles from work. Mostly drive it to work. The mileage is better when it's warm and when it gets warm faster.
