I just baught a used2001 250 PSD 4x4 with 126,000 on it back in Oct. of 04 and have had no problems until this morning. It did not want to start. I went through three 30 second start cycles before it fired off and left a big cloud of white smoke that was laded with the smell of diesel. I let it warm up for a while and drove to the store. The "service engine soon" light came on and stayed on until I got to the store and let it idle. When I got back in the truck, it was off and did not come back on. I haven't driven it again yet so I don't know if it will again or not. I just put a K&N filter in the factory box and it was the first time I drove it since the installation. Has anyone had this problem before? And, can anyone tel me what the API CI-4/SH oil is. I mean just about all D/E oil has the CI-4 rating, but I cant find the SH at the end. According to the book, this is what it takes.

Reason: missed year modle
I dont know about the oil, but if your fuel cap is not on tight enough you will get the service engine light. That happenend to me, (scared the dickens out of me), on my way home from the dealer that I bought it from. I stopped to fuel and the light came on about 30 miles later. after talking with some people that are in the know, I tightened the fuel cap and never had the problem again, its been about 5000 miles now.
as far as the oil goes forget about the numbers in the manual. I own a 2001 f-250 myself and find that ROTELLA is a great oil for any diesel in any climate. i own a #2 oil company and we run rotella in anything that has a diesel in it. best part is you can find it right at wal-mart, about $7.00 a gallon.
White smoke is a sign of unburnt fuel. Sounds like glow plug relay or glow plugs. Check the relay first, cheaper and easier to fix. Doubt it's anything to do with the air filter change. You can plug it in overnight, also. If the SES light came on, it should have thrown a code. If you don't have access to a OBD reader, go to Autozone/Advance or other autoparts store and they'll usually scan it for free. Dealers will charge you $50-60 bucks, just to scan it. I agree, Rotella or Chevron Delo are both great oils. There's thousands of posts on here with everyone else's opinion...

What vehicle are you referring to? I've seen that on half a dozen different Saturn's, but I've never heard of it happening on any Ford. There are no electronic's in the PSD's fuel system that would support an SES light if the cap weren't on.

2002 F-350 PSD. It also says this in the owners manual under the troubleshooting section.
