Hey, i'm starting to look at some CB's and would like some feedback or advice from some fellow members. I want to keep it under 70, and i'm thinking of going with the uniden 538W or something similar. Thanks in advance.
WE have about 20 CB related threads on FTE which can be found by searching!
$70 ? Wow ! Back when they were popular I paid $800. for one.
$70 would barely get you an antenna then.
I have 4 left
Royce Home -
Royce Mobile -630
Midland
Uniden Mpl-5 (500+ channels)
500w Boots > Push & Pull
Not one was less then $500.00 cdn
Go for it... my whole family runs the 510's which are just the no-frills versions.
We used them plowing snow for six years, with no problems at all. We use k40 mag-mount aerials.

I second Mil1ons motion for the cobra. They can be had at just about any truckstop. I drove a big truck several years and never had a problem with my cobra 29 LTD. I think I might hang it in my old ford just to listen to back and forth to work.
As soon as the site search starts working, i'd be happy to do a search mil1ion. As far as cobra's go, i was led to believe you were just buying the name, like Banks.
several years ago i had a cobra 25Ltd limited special edition gold series, looked like the 29Ltd's but had one less **** and was gold plated, it had some funky power chip on the dynamic, i could pull up next to someone with a cheap radio, key mine up and watch theirs smoke....it was fun but mean....i would love to find this type of cobra again, but that one was the only one i ever seen.......i argee with mil1on, when it comes to CB radios, cobra has the market for a reason, they last.......
My vote is for a Cobra. I have a Cobra 25 LTD Classic in my Kenworth. Same thing in my Pete. And a 29 Nighthawk Soundtracker in my pickup. All of them have Telex Road King mic's on them. All of them run through dual Wilson 4' er's. Don't have echo, or roger beep. Only have 'em tuned and peaked. They sound well, and put out well. I've even been complimented on their sound from other drivers. I've had these radios over 8 years now with no complaints. Haven't had anything break, yet. Knock on wood! If I payed more for a name, then it was well worth it!
Not much difference between Cobra and Uniden except for features since Uniden's been making the boards for most of the major brands like Cobra, Midland, SBE and so on since the early 70's.
I'm not sure if they still do, but I believe Uniden is the only one that actually builds the whole radio.
I still have several radios from the 70's and 80's that still work fine. I wonder if the newer ones are as dependable. Several years back the FCC made Uniden and others change the PLL chips to one's that could not be modified to get extra channels, and from what I read in the radio magazines, that put a hurtin' on their sales.
Just remember, setting up the antenna right is the most importent part of the whole deal. If it's not done right the radio won't work very long or get out very far.

...if it actually worked for non-fte members...I keep getting some ' Server under High Load...'' error.
I've been thinking of a CB too. I searched ebay and they had this nice Cobra for around $45...good deal? It's one of those 'Buy It Now' so Im guessing they're new.
