I am getting ready to rebuild an AOD for my Bronco. I need to know what year the AOD is. I found the tag on it but I have no idea on how to decode it. It reads,
PKB A6
012873 H7
E2TP AA
Can anyone decode it for me? Does it tell you the year in that? Thanks!
I'm guessing here, but to me, the 'H7' seems to mean 1987, H being the 8th letter in the alphabet, for the 1980's decade, and 7 being the seventh year. I'm sure someone here with the true scoop will be able to say if that's right or wrong .
It very well could be an 87 tranny. I don't know the history of the 82 F Series you got it from, but I've seen a 1990 F Series with the Engine from an 85 Mustang and a tranny from an 84 Econoline in it. People scrounge parts from everywhere to keep thier work trucks on the road, so I've learned not to be surprised by anything.
Humm.... Good point.
I know how to decode the Mfd. Sticker (in the Door Jam), but that would only tell you the type not the year. As far as parts, are they not interchangeable? I know on my 1993 E4OD I can use many of the upgraded parts from, say, a 1996 E4OD. I'm not super knowledgeable on the AOD.
You might want to try talking to a Ford Service Tech on the phone and pump him for information. Taking your truck there might be a mistake that could end up costing you money, but if you catch the right Tech, at the right time they can reveal all kinds of neat information that could help your quest. I've learned to call at slow times, like just after lunch in the middle of the week. Fridays, Mondays and Weekends are right out. They are almost always busy.
In the meantime, my brother in law, who is a big time Ford Guy (Mustang fan) gave me a bunch of links for me to look at. I think he thinks owning a Ford Truck is going to make me start liking Ford Cars. NOT Bloody Likely! I've worked on enough Escorts, Tauruses (Or is it Tauri?), and Tempos to keep my hated for the poorly engineered cars alive and kicking. Ford Truck on the other hand, are another matter all together.
Anyway, I'm rambling..... Here is a link that might help you in your decryption process.
E2TP AA
E is the decade in this case E means 80
Second digit is the year 2
C=60
D=70
E=80
F=90
Simple except for some casting that are carried over from one year to the next.
I had to explain this to the pups down at the local Ford House Parts Dept.
