Hi, I recently had a Code Alarm remote start installed in my girlfriend's 03 Escape. A few days after installation we noticed that the airbag light was flashing. It may have happened immediately after installation but we don't know as we didn't notice the light until a few days after. Do you think the problem is the a sloppy installer, the remote start brain, or do you think the airbag light was just indicating it is due for service and it is a coincidence that it came on after the remote start was installed? After a few days, the flashing light went away, but I'm still worried about it. By the way, the car only has about 15,000 miles on it and is virtually brand new. We have had no other problems with it, and this is the only mod we have done from the factory condition.
Ford used some cheap connectors under the seats. Usually, it's the passenger side front. There's a wire running along the inside rail that has a white plastic connector towards the back - it's your problem. Disconnnect/reconnect and straighten the wire. This usually solves the problem or else you'll have to replace the connector. This is the sensor used to determine whether someone is in the seat.
Shoving anything under the front seats or people in the back with nervous feet tend to disturb the connector.
Since an '03 is probably still under warranty, be aware that there is a TSB to replace faulty underseat connectors with a new one that has better wire crimps.
2. I'm afraid to take it to the dealer because I'm afraid they will blame it on the aftermarket remote start or the installation. Do you think they will blame it on that or possibly void the warranty for anything electrical related?
1. TSB= Technical Service Bulletin
i should know, my other car is a hyundai(please dont tell anyone lol)
speaking of which . . . my suggestion with the warranty thing is to ask around at different dealers without giving your name(do this on the phone of course) and explain the situation. oh and try calling from a payphone or block your number. run through the whole deal. but dont sound like you're trying to be sneaky or they'll probably just lie. . . and then flat out ask him if it putting the alarm in will void your warranty. tell him you have heard about some TSB's about the connectors and you think thats your problem. . . so on and so on. . . play the different dealers against eachother on a list in your head. take your car to the one who gives off the most "ahh we wont be a-holes about something so stupid" kinda vibe.
hope that helps
Felixr has some good advice. I'm not sure how your alarm system was installed but I seriously doubt it involved messing with the b-u-t-t sensors under the seat.
I've heard of that setting the AIR BAG light, but not causing it to flash! I wonder if they tapped into the air bag wiring for a power source or ground or something... hrmmm
Mine flashed briefly one day and I took it into the dealer. The checked the computer and found no record of any problems. It has not happened again.
'04 Escape XLT
Most of the time people install those alarms the alarm system computer is put under the hood. I know that the whole ford personal saftey system has like 3 crash sensors up front to are near the headlamps and it could be possible that the alarm hit or bumped one of the sensors and that told the computer to turn on the airbag warning lamp. Ford offers a perimeter alarm system as an option its on mine and i like it. With alarm and the securilock its pretty safe. good luck....
