I am thinking of getting a CVA Optima Muzzleloader? I have heard the TC Omega is awesome, but it is a little expensive. Does anybody have any experience with the CVA? It sure seems reasonably priced.
I have a CVA .50 cal. Hawkin style that I've had for over 20 years. I built it from a kit and I used to shoot it quite a bit. I've never hunted with it but a friend of mine did kill a couple of deer with it.
I also have pondered about the Optima. The most important component of the muzzleloader is the barrel. I would assume that most of the barrels are machined the same, and they nearly all have 1-28 twists now. I believe strongly that you are just paying for the KNIGHT and Thompson Center brand names. Maybe CVA has just not made it to the "elite" list yet.
I picked up a CVA Optima Pro .50Cal this past August. It was a little late for me to purchase a muzzleoading license but I did use it during our regular firearms season a couple of times. I took a small buck with it the first time I had it out. Overall, I have been really pleased with it so far. It shoots pretty well, considering we have to use open sights. I can hold a pretty good pattern out to a hundred yards which is good enough for me. My father in law even borrowed it and took a 10 point buck with it.
